Scenario planning is considered the most prominent and powerful technique of futures research. There are, however, indications that such planning practices are not widespread in the logistics service industry. Why and to what extend is this so?

Based on 51 interviews with logistics CEOs, strategists, and scenario experts, Heiko A. von der Gracht shows that the logistics service industry draws a backward picture of scenario planning practices as compared to other industries. He further elaborates that the potentials of scenario planning in logistics are, nevertheless, exceptionally high. Explorative research has therefore been conducted that comprises a scenario study on the future of the logistics service industry in the year 2025. Based on a two-round modified Delphi survey with 30 top logistics executives a surprising but realistic picture of the future has been drawn. The scenarios are intended to provide a sound planning basis for long-term logistics decisions, to illustrate the value and potentials of the technique, and to exemplify a systematic scenario development.

About the Author
Olivier De Schutter is the UN Special Rapporteur on the right to food. A Member of the Global Law School Faculty at New York University, he has been Visiting Professor at a number of institutions, most recently at Columbia University. From 2002 to 2006, he chaired the EU Network of Independent Experts on Fundamental Rights, a high-level group of experts which advised the European Union institutions on fundamental rights issues. He has acted on a number of occasions as expert for the Council of Europe and for the European Union. Since 2004, and until his appointment as the UN Special Rapporteur on the right to food, he has been the General Secretary of the International Federation of Human Rights (FIDH) on the issue of globalisation and human rights.

A Good Introduction and Survey on International Human Rights Law

I bought this book primarily because I am taking the author's online course at edx/Universite Catholique de Louvain. Professor Olivier de Schutter is the UN Special Rapporteur on the right to food and Professor of Human Rights at Universite Catholique de Louvain in Belgium. This means that he is a recognized and well respected expert in this area of law and the materials that he puts together in this book confirms his expertise in this area, A majority of the reading materials in his online course are from this book, but naturally, this books offers more reading materials than the course. So, if you plan to take his online course, this book will serve you well.

This book is divided into three main parts with each part subdivided into separate chapters. The entire book is about 967 pages and, yes, it weights a ton--I have been carrying this around everyday for the past 2 months. Part I, The Sources, includes 2 chapters. Chapter 1, The emergency of international human rights, is subdivided into 4 sections. Section 1, The universal level: the United Nations and human rights; Section 2, The regional level; Section 3, The emerging jus commune of human rights; Section 4, Human rights law as part of international law. Chapter 2, States responsibility and 'jurisdiction' includes 4 sections. Section 1, National territory and 'effective control'; Section 2, Extraterritorial obligations under international human rights law; Section 3, The responsibility of states in inter-state cooperation; Section 4, The responsibility of States for the acts of international organizations.

Section 1, State reporting; Section 2, Individual communications; Section 3, The implementation of findings of UN human rights treaty bodies; Section 4, The reform of the UN human rights treaties system. Chapter 10, The United Nations Charter-based monitoring of human rights, includes 4 sections. Section1, The establishment of the Human Rights Council; Section 2, The complaints mechanism; Section 3, The universal periodic review; Section 4, The special procedures. Chapter 11, Regional mechanism of protection, includes 3 sections. Section 1, The European system of protection of human rights; Section 2, The Inter-American system of protection of human rights; Section 3, The African system of protection of human and peoples' rights.

The topics are discussed through the use of cases, materials and commentary. This includes cases from international courts, committees and treaty bodies as well as national courts. There are questions at the end of each chapter or discussion to challenge and guide the reader to think more in-depth of the issues. Like most law books, the text includes many lengthy references and notes for those who are keenly interested to do further research and studies. Harvard scholar Hinsch's careful study belies the official Chinese notion that homosexuality is a recent import from the decadent West. Using literary, ethnographic and historical sources, he demonstrates that male homosexuality was relatively open and tolerated through most of China's dynasties. Contrary to the accepted image of the rigid Confucian family that permitted only marriage-based sex, Hinsch's broad canvas encompasses same-sex relationships between members of different generations and social classes. Bisexuality was even more widespread than exclusive homosexuality; same-sex marriages for both men and women were institutionalized. Although very little documentation survives on lesbian life in China, Hinsch summarizes the existing information in an appendix. Homosexuals in contemporary China, he observes, live in isolation and fear of legal prosecution. This revealing study fills a major gap.

Hinsch cites evidence of the homosexual tradition in China derived primarily from literature--novels, poetry, and (often very frank and graphic) humor--and secondarily from historical documents. This evidence reveals societal attitudes toward various facets of the issue, such as superior-inferior relationships, prostitution, and political corruption. Examples from the earlier dynasties are few, and here Hinsch often resorts to reading between the lines; throughout there are conclusions based on supposition or assumptions. Nevertheless, the material is well covered, and monographic treatment of the topic is scanty. Recommended for Chinese and gay studies collections.

Readable, fascinating, deserves a wider audience!

I came across this book while researching society and family in ancient China. This is one of those books that really change your worldview - it should be reprinted, updated, available as a mass market paperback! It's very well-written. Although it's a phD dissertation, it's directed at the lay reader, unputdownable, and makes some very important arguments about Chinese society that contemporary Chinese should all know about. Contains some really moving passages from classical Chinese literature, funny jokes that show that the ancient Chinese were as amusing as the Italians in The Decameron or as bawdy as the English pilgrims in Canterbury Tales. Humanizes the ancient Chinese who otherwise appear as stiff, prudish, and boring. A lot of these literary texts have been untranslated, undiscovered, or quietly 'forgotten'. This book would be enjoyed by any Asian or non-Asian literary person. It's not just for a gay audience or an academic community. I'm buying this author's other book as well, about Women in Ancient China, because I'm sure it would just be as well-researched and enjoyable.

Not Just for China Scholars

This delightfully accessible book on an inaccessible topic provides an appetizing read. Bejeweled with wonderful quotations which are variously elegant, erotic, bawdy, and sometimes just simply endearing, the author reviews the two thousand year literary tradition of male same-sex attraction known as the "cut sleeve" (based on a lovely story which I will not spoil by recounting). In the course of this overview, the author provides interesting evidence of the benefits to kinship groups of same-sex relationships as well as the manner in which this tradition harmonized with reproductive marriage. Lastly, he describes how this tradition was lost--though one suspects that his explanation based on western cultural influence does not do justice to indigenous circumstance.

Love the book, now we have to see if it works!

I started reading it yesterday morning and finished last night, so easy to read and sounds like a perfect diet for me. I go between Paleo and eating right for the most part so it is not foreign to me. As with most diets, I hate the fact that I have to remember a list of what I can and cannot eat - but how else will it work, right? I am starting today so that I get to have a cheat day on Saturday. I have about 60 lbs to lose so I will check back within a month or two and update my review! Definitely a good read though, really enjoyed it - I didnt skip stuff like I usually do with diet books (I have read A LOT of diet books :-))

WILL TURN YOUR LIFE AROUND!

I went on this Diet Plan so that my husband would too, after he had 2 heart attacks and two stents for his heart. He is diabetic, formed a blood clot after heart surgery and was not expected to make it past the one year point. He found Dolvett's 3-1-2-1 Diet Plan super easy to follow along with his app to log what he is eating. He has now been on it 6 mo., has lost 42 pounds without feeling like he is suffering at all, and is off all insulin. And, this is without being able to exercise due to his blood clot.

I am not making up that when we went into his doctor for his check-up the doctor had tears in his eyes and said that all 3 doctors had discussed his case and did not feel that he would make it. He was shocked at my husband's turn around, because after his first two check-ups (before going on this plan) he had not improved at all. The starting of losing weight on this plan, the low carbs and fat, just turned him around. Now instead of making plans for his death, we are making future plans again. I KNOW THIS SOUNDS LIKE A FAKE TESTIMONIAL, BUT IT ISN'T!

I would advise 3-1-2-1 to anyone! It is easy, your not hungry, you don't feel deprived, and it can change your life.

not worth it

This book was recommended to me by a number of people, so I picked up a copy. To be honest, I was a little dissappointed. The descriptions of each compound are short and not all that informative. They reiterate a lot of the standard rhetoric by comparing everything to either LSD or MDMA. Some of the stuff about fentanyl analogues is interesting,..., this book is definately not worth it. Your money would be much better spent on either PiHKAL or TiHKAL by the good Dr. Shulgin (half the references in "Designer Drugs Directory" are from these books anyway).

Amazing book on research methods

Of all the books I have used in research methods courses, this one is by far the best. It is written in a clear and engaging style, with plenty of excellent examples. The authors cover everything from the most basic (like the difference between an independent and dependent variable) to the most advanced techniques and strategies for designing a tight, valid experiment. This book was a joy to read and I highly recommend it to anyone with an interest in social science research methods.
