Science writer Ravage delivers a fascinating and unflinching look behind the scenes at the nationally acclaimed burn unit of Boston's Massachusetts General Hospital. The reader is warned early on that the unit is "no place for the squeamish," and the book details numerous examples of the hard work that its doctors and nurses must perform, such as the excision of dead skin that "comes off like peels of rubber cement." But Ravage is never gratuitously graphic, and she displays solid research and reporting skills in presenting the historical and the personal sides of burn injuries. She provides an excellent historical context to the development of burn treatments, from Boston's infamous Cocoanut Grove fire of 1942 through last year's fire at a Rhode Island music club. She also uses the experiences of two former burn patients and their families (names changed at their request) to show in detail how doctors and nurses treat horrific burns. Her greatest success is in interweaving these two sides, such as her explanation of how ideas have evolved in the areas of respiratory injury, shock and the surface treatment of burn wounds, which brings the reader much closer to truly understanding what the patients endure. This is an enlightening look at an important area of hospital care.

Burn Unit is a well-written, ingenious book on the cause of burns and the pathophysiology and clinical course of patients who have sustained severe burn injury. The author describes the "burn disease" through the clinical care of two patients: one had a rather small, partial-thickness injury of 10 percent of the body that involved the face and hands, and the other had a moderately severe burn of 35 percent and required skin grafting of the face and upper extremities. Each chapter describes the clinical care of the two patients and includes the thoughts and concerns of family members as well as those of the members of the burn team. These personal aspects are preceded or followed by detailed and accurate descriptions of the history and pathophysiology of resuscitation after burn shock, infection, wound healing, and other topics. These sections are written informally, but the details are accurate, informative, and enjoyable to read, and they flow smoothly from the care of the two patients to the science of burn disease. Although Burn Unit describes care at the Burn and Trauma Center at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, the author repeatedly describes the controversies associated with the management of the burn injuries and the alternatives to the treatment that each patient received. This is not a "burn survivor" book but, rather, a well-written textbook on burn injuries. Because the information is presented in an understandable, detailed way, it would be well worth reading not only by all members of a burn team but also by burn victims and their families. The history of burns, as presented here, is remarkably detailed and comprehensive, and this alone makes the book worth reading. Essentially, Burn Unit is a textbook written from the perspectives of the patient, the family, and the members of the burn team. FROM A BURN PATIENT'S SPOUSE TO ANYONE

On August 3, my wife was burned in central Anatolia. On August 15, we med-vaced her to the United States. On September 1, I bought this book. On September 20, I received the book. I was so rapt by the writing that I finished this book in two days. Understand, my wife was in the hospital at the time. Reading was not a priority. I visited my wife daily while I ran a family and my own business.

Sometimes a writer's capabilities can so overwhelm the topic. A good writer can make the worst topics readable. Burns, sores, sepsis, pain, and scars are what I neither care to read about nor wish others to read about. The sterile black ink on the white pages cannot deliver the sensations to you of the stench associated with the dead skin, nor show you the grotesque complexity of the red and yellow skin which bleeds easily and often.

I no more would ask a person to experience what my family has lived the past few months, than I would ask them to clean my plumbing. Burns are a horrible topic which Ms. Ravage has managed to make less horrible.

I used this book for something more than enjoyment. The doctors' mouths, often as clasped as the arteries of their surgical patients, tell little to the patients' family, and when they speak, the language is too often cliched with inexplicables and nondeterminatives. This book answered questions, told me what to look forward to, and outlined what to anticipate. This was my "Burn Patients' Questions for Dummies." But, written well.

I cringed. I cried. I swallowed hard. And, at times, I had to leave the book. The writng and insight were as razor sharp as the scalpels discussed and referenced in the portion discussing grafting.

Good work Ms. Ravage! You helped a great deal. I can only tell others in my predicament, read this book. And, after you read the book, you will feel better about what there is looming in the slowly progressing and little discussed world of burns.

Fascinating, informative

This is a powerful book, packed with information about the history of burn treatment, the structure and nature of skin, medical techniques, how the body heals and what it takes to work in the demanding field of burn care. The personal stories of the physicians, nurses, inventors, patients and their families sparkle with life.
At times, I must admit, I became impatient with the structure of the book, the deep dives into details about historic fires or what felt like more information than I wanted to know about a particular medical technique. I longed to get back to what was happening with the people who came to feel like my patients, my staff.
The wonderful thing is that Barbara Ravage can make you feel so intimately connected to the people she interviewed, the scenes she witnessed. You sense her driving curiosity and fascination. She makes descriptions of complicated information such as the body's responses to burns or difficult medical procedures vivid and clear. Sometimes her analogies will even make you smile.
I plan to recommend this book to several friends.

Fascinating - impossible to put down!

Being neither a medical professional nor a burn survivor, I didn't expect to be completely fascinated by this book, but I was - once I started reading it, I really couldn't put it down until I'd finished it.
Ms. Ravage's skill in weaving together vivid details of life in the burn unit with overviews of burn science reminded me of one of my favorite writers, John McPhee. Like McPhee, she's able to take a subject the reader knows little about and within a few pages make that subject completely riveting. She also has McPhee's rare ability to illuminate her subject from every possible angle: this book covers the history of burn treatments, stories of some of the most deadly U.S. fires, how the human body responds to burns, the heroic daily work of burn doctors and nurses - and, most unforgettably, the hell endured by recovering burn patients. I was especially impressed by how perfect Ms. Ravage's tone was throughout the book: the scientific passages are easily understandable but not dumbed-down, and the descriptions of the emotionally-charged interactions among the burn unit staff , the patients, and their families are unforgettably moving without a hint of sentimentality.
Despite the grimness of the subject, this book leaves you feeling wonderfully inspired by what ordinary people are capable of: unbelievable courage, endurance, devotion, and compassion.

Helps Immeasurably in Practicing Chinese Medicine

This is the third volume and most difficult to find book written by Jane Lyttleton and William MacLean in their three volume internal medicine series that should be in the library of every acupuncturist and practitioner of Oriental Medicine. The books are oriented around Organ Systems, with each set of Chinese Medicine diseases broken out by pattern. Each chapter looks at the major patterns, Chinese Medicine etiology, Western analogues, and gives symptoms, pulse, tongue, points, herbs and herbal modifications and prepared herbal formulas for each disease. Most chapters include a decision tree to identify patterns and a summary of herbs for each pattern. I use the series in my TCM Internal Medicine Class and it is much easier for my students than before the books were published.

Blood and fluid physiology are two very complex topics in Chinese Medicine and I am glad to see this book which enhances information found in Steve Clavey's Fluid Physiology and Pathology in Traditional Chinese Medicine, 2e. This volume is more practically oriented while Clavey gives a stronger theoretical background.

If I had to make a bare minimum library for practicing TCM I would include the three books from this series, Lyttleton's Treatment of Infertility with Chinese Medicine, 1e, 1e, Either Chen's or Bensky's Materia Medica and Formulas books and Peter Deadman's A Manual of Acupuncture. Very worth the money (at least for list price since this volume is out of print at the time of this review and has been resold for over $300.)

This book has a lot of relevant information, it is concise and very organized. It is a great point of reference to have in your clinic as it includes TCM diagnosis as well as comparable western biomedicine diagnosis as well.

I loved this book when I first got it when my children were young and now I got another copy to send to my granddaughter and read to her when I see her next. It has a lovely rhyming patter, and sweet storyline promoting rescuing unloved, unwanted pets.

A wonderful story! My favorite children's book!

This is my absolute favorite children's book, and give it to all of my new parent friends! The story is told in rhyme making the reading predictable for children. The illustrations are colorful and include "hidden" animals. And it's a wonderful, feel-good story! I only wish the author had written more stories about Maxi the Taxi Dog! (there are two other books)

The BEST Children's Book Ever!!!

I have given this book as a gift four times -- and each time it has quickly become the child's favorite book by far. A very smart little ten-month-old I know (and love) crawls over to the bookshelf and gets "Maxi Taxi" three to four times a day and hands it to you to read it to him. I can recite the book in my sleep at this point!! The rhymes are lovely; the illustrations are sweet and the message is just beautiful. I promise you that your young children will adore this book.

False advertising

I am dissatisfied with this story. First, nowhere in the summary did it indicate that this was the first part of a story, I do not enjoy being taken in. Second, most of the characters diverged too much from their P&P personalities to make the story believable, in particular Mr. Bennett's. In short, I do not recommend it.

Wish it was a complete book, not 1st in a series!

I gave this book a 4 for the plot and the standard of writing which were great. It was well written and unique enough to hold my attention. I was disappointed that it wasn't complete in one book, am getting fed up paying full price for what is essentially half a story. (Nearly gave a 3star rating for that but bring fair had to rate the content not my disappointment). Once you buy knowing there is another book to come you should enjoy it but the cynical part of me feels that this was originally intended to be one book and then greed took over so it was split.

I was reluctant to read this P&P variation as I did not like the premise and I was right. Other than the two main characters everyone is so changed from their Jane Austen personalities as to make them unpleasant. The story started off well enough but shortly became angst ridden and, to add to my frustration, D & E spent very little time together though they seemed to just miss each other often.

About 60% through the book I admit to quickly scanning through the rest and stopping whenever I saw a reference to either Darcy or Elizabeth. There was nothing there to satisfy my hunger for their romance. I even at one point doubted that they would ever get together but thankfully the author was not that cruel.

Good solid introduction to the 90 degree dial

Short and pithy introduction to the use of the 90 degree dial as it impacts Cosmobiology and Uranian Astrology. Wonderful concise introduction to Cosmobiology which I have just recently rediscovered. The use of midpoints speaks to me in a way where conventional astrological approaches do not. Great examples using midpoints to analyze the charts of Mike Tyson and Bill Clinton. Uses a visual approach to learning these tecniques with lots of big charts and diagrams. If you enjoy this brief introduction to midpoints I would suggest that the interested reader next check out "Working with Astrology" by Michael Harding and the late Charles Harvey. The best book I have ever read on the subject...Astrology is marvelous...

Great Early Ballard

Billenium (1962), J. G. Ballard’s first collection of short stories, contains three masterpieces of the 50s/60s: “Billenium” (1961), “Build-Up” (variant title: The Concentration City) (1957), and “Chronopolis” (1960). The first is a deadpan satire on overpopulation, the second a fantastic Borgesian depiction of an endless city that stretches (literally) in all directions, and the third a vision of a city that had enough and revolted against time. I preferred these three ruminations, that unfolded in evocative and decaying urban spaces, to the three decadent and baroque stories—”Studio 5, The Stars” (1961), “Mobile” (variant title: “Venus Smiles”) (1957), and “Prima Belladonna” (1956)—from his famous Vermillion Sands sequence. The remaining four are all readable.

As with J. G. Ballard’s first novel masterpiece, The Drowned World (1962), the sense of decay and malaise that permeate majority of the stories in Billenium is gorgeously oppressive. Like a humid evening that clings to your skin, the images evoked in Billenium are hard to shake off.

Highly recommended for all fans of SF. If you are interested I recommend the recently published The Complete Short Stories of J. G Ballard (2010). I own both the omnibus + a few of the original paperbacks (mainly for the Richard Powers’ cover art).

Brief Plot Summary/Analysis (some spoilers)

“Billenium” (variant title: of “Billennium”) (1961) 5/5 (Masterpiece): A hellish future where overpopulation has resulted in drastic reductions in the allotments of living space—the maximum by law is four square meters! The citizens of this future spend their time “scanning the classifieds in the newspapers” desperate to find a slightly larger room (7). And then Ward discovers an illegal, abandoned, and hidden room in their new residence filled with old (space consuming) furniture. A reminder of freedom, a window into a previous era, of open space, symbolizing deliverance from oppressive, crowding bodies… But, the Malthusian nightmare cannot be stopped. Ballard’s wonderful satire is on show. Brilliant.

“The Insane Ones” (1962) 4.5/5 (Very Good): ”Anyway, [treatment is] against the [Mental Freedom laws]. Do you know what would happen if they caught me giving psychiatric treatment?” (23). Another almost brilliant satire of the treatment (or lack there of) of mental illness… This futuristic Earth has outlawed psychiatric treatment altogether, claiming it violates an individual’s individual liberty: “the mentally ill were on their own, spared pity and consideration, made to pay for their failings. The sacred cow of the community was the psychotic, free to wander where he wanted [...]” (24). Gregory, a one time psychiatrist, compulsively travels—an escape from his past, where he treated (illegally) the president’s daughter. But then he’s propositioned for help by a young woman who seeks, clandestinely, treatment for her close friend.

“Studio 5, The Stars” (1961) 4/5 (Good): Vermilion Sands is a resort filled with the independently wealthy, artistically inclined—every story in Ballard’s famous resort reeks of decadence and malaise. Filled with cadillacs, strange art, mansions, bizarre technology, seductive woman…. In “Studio 5, The Stars” the narrator’s porch is continuously inundated with verse from the residence of a mysterious Aurora Day. All poets use poetry machines, set parameters, churn out “masterpieces” for the local journals. But Aurora Day shocks all with her non-machine generated prose! And she has a plan to force everyone to abandon the machines.

“The Gentle Assassin” (1961) 3/5 (Average): The weakest story in the collection is Ballard’s half-hearted attempt to tackle a time travel paradox. Dr. Jamieson travels back in time and visits himself. There is bomb attack, a plot twist, a tender meeting between his younger self and a woman he still pines for. Although the story is told relatively well, it has few of the trademarks of Ballard’s best.

“Build-Up” (variant title: The Concentration City) (1957) 5/5 (Masterpiece): In a dystopic future a vast city stretches forth in all directions, vertical, and horizontal (evoking Borges’ 1941 masterpiece, “Library of Babel”)… The oppressive structure prevents inhabitants from leaving their regions (a high speed train does exist) and everyone lives in fear of cataclysmic fires. Franz (an hommage to Kafka) is obsessed with the notion of “flight” and the specimens of wildlife that indicate animals that flew, perhaps before the city’s mythic “foundation.” He tests a model airplane successfully, a sets off on the train to find “free space” for manned flight.

“Now: Zero” (1959) 3/5 (Average): A metafictional ending makes this story vaguely readable. The narrator tells the tale of his encounter with an outrageous power. A power that allows him to dictate the fate of his enemies by pen… And he’s a mournful fellow bereft of opportunities in the business empire where he works. But there’s a catch of course. And we are the victims!

“Mobile” (1957) (variant title: “Venus Smiles”) 4/5 (Good): The best story in the Vermilion Sands sequence I have read so far. A sculpture named Lubitsch (yes, evoking the German-American director) recovering from a “traumatic encounter with Neo-Futurism” (105) decides revenge is the best strategy. He designs a bizarre statue of some pseudo-metal material that threatens to take over the city with its destructive roots. Art generates destruction. Art that actually carries out a radical ideology.

“Chronopolis” (1960) 5/5 (Masterpiece): The best in the collection. At some point in the future, society revolts against increasing regimentation/control: people were literally “driven by the master clock” (127). The clock became the sign of oppression—and the Time Police were established to destroy everyone’s allegiance to the watch! The city centers were slowly abandoned, the buildings sank into decay, and the old factories no longer operate. People move in the direction of the past (i.e. away from the ultra urban). Despite the illegality of keeping time, Newman (who is rather “traditional” in his sensibilities) is obsessed with building clocks. And his world is changed when he discovers a watch and his “English” teacher takes him to see the remains of city. Gorgeous, ironic, with a brilliant ending…

“Prima Belladonna” (1956) 3.5/5 (Good) is another Vermilion Sands story, and one of Ballard’s earliest published works. Right away the reader is plunged into Ballard’s trademark decadent malaise,”I first met Jane Ciraclylides during the Recess, the world slump of boredom, lethargy [...]” (140). The narrator grows mysterious music plants that are tuned by using an Arachnid Orchid. He meets Jane, a seductive and fiery woman, whose voices has great effect on the Arachnid Orchid.

“The Garden of Time” (1962) 4/5 (Good): A Time Garden (what exactly this means is not dwelled on at length) is but a mote before an advancing horde. Its two occupants pick the last flowers and perform the seemingly timeless rituals (playing/listening to harpsichord) as the deluge approaches. An effective mood piece…
