About the Author
Robert James Coons began his study of Daoism and Chinese culture at the early age of eight. Throughout his childhood he studied Oriental martial arts and always maintained a passion for the study of ideas coming from other cultures and times in history. On suggestion of his teacher, Robert went to China in search of a new perspective on martial arts. Robert currently resides between Canada, where he runs a tea business and meditation club, and Henan China, where he operates an English school and studies Chinese arts and culture.

Great foundation for meditation practice (the Daoist way)

This is a phenomenal book for those who are interested in meditation in general and enjoy beauty and sensibilities of Daoist culture.

Robert has set up a great foundational look at Daoist meditation: its roots in history, its evolution and practical uses today; along with fascinating scientific and metaphysical interpretations of the process.

The introduction and exercises are easy to follow and the text acts a sort of cheerleader to guide you through the process of learning and integrating the new practices.

It is all very encouraging, that is until you get to the deeper ideas later in the book which require more patience and caused me to stumble a bit. The deeper concepts may need to be read slowly a few times to really understand (and perhaps for many years to come).

Robert succinctly concludes with some more practical advice and leaves you wanting more.

I highly recommend this book for those looking for a direct, practical and down to earth approach to meditation.

This book now resides on my favourites shelf along with my tea set; ready to join me in my meditation sessions.

Painstakingly prepared from a tenth century manuscript now in Florence, this is the first modern critical edition of the complete text of the Taktika and includes a facing English translation, explanatory notes, and extensive indexes.

I like the text overall however things seem to be omiitted here and there like proper formation and such. With this text its advisable to get Maurices Strategikon so you have a better understand of what he says. Also the lack of diagrams is a negative for me.

A collection from the Qur'an and the hadiths

Nerina Rustomji has collected many sources of Islamic ideas about the Garden/Paradise and the Fire/Hell. She has drawn on the Qur'an, hadiths and eschatological manuals. She traces the development of these ideas from their beginnings in the Qur'an through ever greater elaborations, with more and more details filled in over the centuries.

An interesting feature of Islamic thought about the next life is that it envisions what Rustomji justly calls an "afterworld," which is somewhat different than the usual Christian idea of an "afterlife." While Christians tend to see the afterlife of the saved as primarily existence in the direct presence of God, with little elaboration of the physical conditions of heaven, Muslims have many detailed concepts about the physical characteristics of Paradise and its inhabitants, both human and non-human. The final chapter includes reproductions of numerous paintings that represent life in both Paradise and the Fire.

This book is a useful source of information for those curious about Muslim concepts of life after death. There is a lot more to it that the "72 virgins" that seem to be about the only bit of (mis)information that circulates in popular lore in America these days.

This book, like many other academic books from many publishers in recent years, sadly suffers from a lack of proofreading. It is riddled with small errors on many pages, and has a few larger ones too. Academic publishers, please go back to using editors and proofreaders!

One of the More Popular Books

First, and foremost, it must be known: All Calvin and Hobbes are great. Yukon Ho!, however, is one that tends to rise above the rest. It's true this is one of the earlier books and includes the 9 verse tune The Yukon Song and has all the great cartoons, but why it seems to be more popular, I cannot say. All I know and can guarantee is that it's funny and is everything Calvin and Hobbes. From the beginning of the book where Calvin is convinced that he and Hobbes have traveled into the future (nope not with a cardboard box) it is too easy to appreaciate Calvin's motives. He's not after the secrets of genetic cloning or the what politician is waging wars with other countries. He's looking forward to floating cities and telling people in the present what he saw. And this is the real beauty of Calvin and Hobbes shows through. It's the quest of a six-year-old to have a good time with a furry friend. Rarely in a comic strip has such devotion and integrity of a kid been so accurately portrayed.
You'll chuckle at Calvin's dad 's explanation of the workings of a carburetor and the hilarious camping trip to a desolate rock that Calvin's entire family embarks on. Rosalyn appears again, and yes, again terrorizes Calvin. Calvin digs up dirt on his dad,which compromises his father's high-ranking position of dad. Calvin tries and fails to be the next Houdini and Susie and Calvin are assigned an a project together. All the way to the new and improved transmogrifier, it's pure magic, purely Calvin and Hobbes.

"Yukon Ho!" is a collection of daily and Sunday "Calvin and Hobbes" comic strips. Since the dates have not been left in the strips, it is difficult to determine the time frame involved. But that doesn't really matter, because this strip is as fresh and funny today, years after Bill Watterson ended the strip, as it was back in the day.
If you have never heard of Calvin and his adventures with his stuffed tiger, Hobbes, pick this book up today and become hooked with the rest of us.

One of the world's three major offshore races (along with the Fastnet out of England and America's Newport Race to Bermuda), the 630-mile course from Sydney, Australia, to Hobart, Tasmania, is a test of skills, guts, and endurance in notoriously unpredictable, fickle waters--and in any weather.

On Boxing Day, 1998, the 115 boats jockeying at the starting line off Sydney's Nielsen Park Beach had been warned that low-pressure weather systems were conspiring to guarantee a wild and chancy race. Yet few sailors anticipated the ferocity of the storm that descended around two o'clock the next morning, whipping up gale-force winds and waves tall enough to send 25-ton yachts "spearing into midair," then "plunging down into the trough ... like repeatedly launching a truck off a 30-foot ramp and awaiting the crash." Joining the summer's books on the treacherous Vend?e Globe sailing race (Derek Lundy's The Godforsaken Sea and Pete Goss's Close to Wind), Mundle's effort is the first of three forthcoming titles about the 1998 Sydney-Hobart yachting race (Pocket is publishing Martin Dugard's account in September; Little, Brown will offers Bruce Knecht's next year). In that race, seven boats were abandoned, five sank, six people died and 55 sailors were hoisted by rescuers from the impetuous seas. Seasoned journalist Mundle, himself a three-time Sydney-Hobart veteran, writes a knowledgeable account of the 115 boats and 1135 competitors that left Sydney Harbor on December 26, having precious little warning about the brutal cyclone that awaited them in the perilous Bass Strait. When the seas began towering to the height of five-story buildings, sailors were tossed about their yachts like rag dolls in a malevolent washing machine. Mundle, who covered the race for Australian television, deliberately sails around the tempest of controversies that followed the event, preferring to treat the story as a straight job of blow-by-blow reportage. While his careful plotting of a dozen boats' travails is certainly of interest, a surreal sense of dispassion pervades the text like an eerie calm found in the eye of a storm. Nonetheless, moments of poignancy stand out. One strung-out sailor hallucinates a monkey sitting atop a jagged stump of mast, while several others vow that spending hours in a wrecked cabin full of vomit, diesel fuel and salt-water convinced them to change their lives. "I've been a pretty selfish bastard," says one chastened survivor. "Just ask my wife." 40,000 first printing.

This is the first of several expected books about the disastrous 1998 Sydney-to-Hobart yacht race. Only 44 of the 115 yachts that started the race finished, five yachts sank, seven were abandoned, six sailors died, and 57 racers had to be rescued from the hurricane-strength winds and up to 90' swells. Mundle, a sailor and journalist who reported the awful tragedy live on Australian TV, relies on 124 interviews with survivors to relive the terror and excitement of a storm every bit as fierce as that described in Sebastian Junger's Perfect Storm (LJ 5/15/97). He discusses weather conditions and Australian search-and-rescue operations as well. Though it doesn't really offer any nautical advice on how to weather extreme conditions, as does K. Adlard Coles's classic Heavy Weather Sailing (LJ 10/1/68), this tale should warn offshore sailors that there are indeed times when even best craft can founder. Fast, furious and informative. READ THIS BOOK!

When I decided to read this book, I actually started with another book on the subject recommended by Sports Illustrated. Based on Amazon reviewers I selected this one and wasn't disappointed.
Mundle attempts to show the personal side of the individuals as well as the intense struggle on each boat and helicopter. This is a spellbinding story which he did a good job of relaying. I learned about sailing but more importantly, I learned what it felt like to confront your worst nightmare come true.
This is a great subject correctly described by the author and as a bonus, the pictures in the book are good also. Off-coast sailing? Not for me after this book.
