All Residents should own it

The book is very helpful from basics to advanced topics. This book can serve as the only book needed for IR training in residency and oral boards preparation for radiology residents. Has individual chapters on puncture of IJ, Subclavian v, femoral v, femoral a, brachial a etc. Has individual chapters on all interventional procedures commonly performed in private practice hospitals and most of the IR procedures performed in University hospitals. All authors are fellowship trained at prestigious institutions and are currently practicing IR and Neuroradiology at academic centers. Yes, Kandarpa's book is excellent and covers a some info not in the pocket radiologist book. However, Kandarpa's book does not have any radiographs or color illustrations and tends to have long chapters from which it is more time consuming to get the scoop on focused issues such as how to perform a cerebral arteriogram, how to puncture the RIJ and LIJ, how to quickly drain an abcess or place a nephrostomy, how to perform an epidural steroid injection etc. Also the coverage of venous access and neuroradiology topics is much more thorough in the pocket radiologist book than in Kandarpa's. The pocket radiologist book provides step by step advice to guide physicians for performing procedures quickly and safely.

Best Interventional Radiology book ever written

100 chapters. Each chapter focuses on a specific procedure so you can skim it night before or immediately prior to doing procedure. Chapter format is key facts, indications/contraindications, preprocedure, procedure technique, complications, postprocedure management. Covers venous access, arterial, GU, neuro spine, pain management, neuroangio. Venous access includes ultrasound approaches to all major veins including translumbar IVC. Catheter placement includes PICC's, Dialysis catheters, Ports, placement thru recanalized veins etc. Arterial includes diagnostic angio, PTA, stenting incl PTRAS, thrombolysis, embo etc. Neuro spine includes epidural steroids, SNRB, discography, vertebroplasty, myelography etc. Neuroangio includes diagnostic, carotid and vertebral stenting, aneurysm embo, AVM embo, stroke thrombolysis etc.

Strong work from a master

It's completely shocking to me that if you go into a superchain bookstore these days - (I'm not writing about Amazon, which will usually get it for you if it's in print) but you know the stores I mean, - if you go into them and browse the mystery sections, Ross MacDonald is barely represented. Shocking, because he truly deserves the William Goldman NY Times quote that graces the covers of most of his books: "The finest series of detective novels ever written by an American." His Lew Archer novels truly are among the best we have, and although all eighteen aren't equally as great, they are all usually a cut above the rest of what's out there.

I cut my teeth on Chandler; and his three excellent Marlowe novels, The Big Sleep, Farewell My Lovely, and The Long Goodbye, are beautiful, superlative books. Hammett's got The Maltese Falcon, The Glass Key, and Red Harvest. But MacDonald will keep you engrossed through eighteen incredibly plotted, almost always puzzling, hard boiled mysteries that surpass in some respects those six mentioned novels, and most anything by any later writer. Even after you're on to his method you'll still find it hard, if not impossible, to decipher the resolutions to his mysteries before he presents them. Black Money may not be equal to MacDonald's best, which are unmatched by anything in the genre, but the chances are good that its plot and mystery will keep you guessing until the very end.

BLACK MONEY, BLACK HEARTS

Even on the surface, the assignment seems odd. Lew Archer is retained by a young man not to bring his love back to him, but merely to save her from a relationship with one Francis Martel, who claims to be a Frenchman. The young lady, Ginny Fablon, is of course beautiful and enticing, but there is much more behind her story. Roy, her father, had been a suicide seven years before. There is something in this clubby, California upper middle class environment that Archer, who reads people well, finds abnormal.

Martel, a thirtyish man of intelligence, deceit and aliases, is not who he seems. Neither are most of the crucial characters who mainly major in pretense. Through the halls of third-rate academia,the local Tennis Club, a Las Vegas gambling den where money is skimmed off the top, and two murders, Archer peels back the layers of mystery that jolts us into the present. Lust, both sexual and monetary, is a constant. Corruption at all levels rules the day.

Critics have pointed to The Great Gatsby as the inspiration for the character of Francis Martel, and for this, Ross McDonald's most literary effort.Frankly, despite its acclaim, Gatsby did nothing for me when I dragged through it 20 years ago. But maybe Fitzgerald's work gave Ross McDonald something to shoot for. Despite his fine body of work, the Lew Archer novels had elements of preachiness in them, as well as a habit of stretching secret familial relationships beyond rationality. Neither of these flaws, minor as they are when compared to the whole, are present here. Having read all but three or four of the Archer novels, this seems the best of them all, on a par with Farewell, My Lovely and The Maltese Falcon.

Black Money is flawed but definatly worth reading.

Ross Macdonald writes in the tradition of the American detective story as developed by Dashiell Hammett and Raymond Chandler. MacDonald is definatly inferior to these masters but still worth reading.
The language of the classic American Detective story is the language of the street, and MacDonald can write with skill. His hero/narrator, Archer, is a man who raised himself out of the slums; a classic "tough guy" with a street wise knowledge of how people act and how to handle them. MacDonald, however, is never really comfortable with this view of life. His background is that of an academic (Ph. D, taught school, studied psyciatry) and it shows in all the wrong ways. We often hear little mini-lectures on the inner workings of the characters and are occasionally treated to such literary allusions as Dante and Beatrice. These things clash badly with the "tough guy" tone of the book, and this inconsistancy is MacDonalds most serious defect.
When it comes to plotting, however, MacDonald is excellent. His plots are cleaver, complex and have the feel of truth about them - something that is often lacking in today's mysterys. When he isn't writing like a collage professor, Macdonald can write dialogue that has the dangerous and gritty feel of the underworld. And there are moments that are priceless. One of those moments is when as when the victim, who has had most of her family murdered, lies down in a pool of blood next to her dead lover/murderer, the man responsible for the murders and also the man she loved. She lays there looking at him until the police come.
While he may not have the consistancy of Hammett or Chandler, MacDonald has many of the things that make American detective fiction work, and this book is one of his best.

Extraordinary!

This is the most extraordinary book on the most extraordinary feature of human life: Romantic Love. Its encyclopeadic scope and content are beyond redaction. Finally, an analytic philosopher undertakes the most underanalyzed emotion of love and expounds on it from every possible vantage. Most of the myths, fantasies, and illusions are swept away, and in their stead is a heady analysis of what love actually is, how it is manifested, and why it may be desired.

The book is fifteen years old, so why am I the first reader to review it on Amazon? If this book is as extraordinary as I claim, why aren't there thousands of previous reviews? I've been stumped by this question for weeks, and I think I have an answer.

Solomon's work is truly encyclopeadic. Perspectives from philosophy, psychology, behavioralism, theology, sociology, literature, history, anthropology, and nearly every conceivable discipline are included. I found this fact to be its strength, but it could also be a liability. If one is not acquainted with major concepts from each of these disciplines, not to mention their seminal writers and works, many of Solomon's observations may appear obscure and opaque. Singular cases of insight might be reduced to "huh," and just passed over.

Perhaps another problem may be involved. Many of us may not want to know what "love really is," and when stripped of all its illusions, myths, and fantasies, maybe what is "really" left does not fit one's idealizations. Instead of clarity and substance, many may prefer their own distortions, hopes, and dreams. Perhaps "love," especially romantic love, is so over-romanticized that peeling away the nonsense leaves one bereft.

Ironically, these two possible objections are the book's biggest strengths. Romantic love is one of many emotions, even several emotions rolled into one, that is simultaneously a cause for joy and a source of friction. Fundamentally, it is a visceral response to an over-intellectualized feeling. As often as it is comforting, it can be a source of angst; as often as we extol it, we frequently berate our "beloveds." So, what gives? How and why can romantic love tie us in knots, and then have us repudiate its very influence? Obviously, many of us have not come to terms with romantic love, and for someone to present it in such clear, stark, and "unromantic" a manner may undermine our confidence in, and our anger over, romantic love.

For me, all these "conflicting" attitudes are necessarily entailed. Maybe, all these seeming contrarieties are at the core of what we mean when we say we're "in love." Romantic love is a constant "tug of war," and for me, that is its singular strength. That's how we "grow" in love. Romantic love is what makes "the other" a part of one's self, and the self often rebels at becoming or identifying with "the other." Perpetual tension is what give romantic love its vitality, its transformative qualities, even its reidentification of ourselves. But facing that reality is sometimes difficult. Perhaps Solomon reaches too close to its truth.

For those strong enough to endure the tension, and those whose knowledge is more encyclopeadic, this book will add insight and clarity to one of the most challenging of human emotions. And the next time you say, "I love you," you might actually "know" what you mean. Not that we ever do, but at least we'll feel closer to what we think we mean.

Great book but errors

The textbook is a wonderful introduction to horticultural biology. The black and white format of figures is criminal but typical for all horticulture textbook publishers.

Errors:

Great book invaluable to horticultural students

I have recently completed a BSc (HONS) in horticulture and found this book very useful. I used many text during my degree, however this was the one I refered to most. I think that students particularily in the initial stages of a degree or diploma course would find the book most valuable. Many areas of interest are covered e.g. biological control of plant pathogens, irrigation and many other areas that may not be apparent from the books title. There are many good pictures and diagrams and each chapter has useful references. This book will also be of interest to horticultural professionals.

I think it is too simple and too expensive.
I think so because nowadays we have more complicated and modern systems on board, such as ASD, VOITH, etc, and they do not talk at all about those systems. Also this version is digital and it could be more cheaper...

Tokumei's book is a provocative study of the debate over the moral and political implications of Darwinian science. (Larry Arnhart, Presidential Research Professor of Political Science, Northern Illinois University, author of Darwinian Conservatism) Richard Tokumei asks all the right questions and as far as I am concerned provides all the right answers. At the very least his book should serve to remind us that these days there is nothing so rare as common sense. (Burt Prelutsky, Author of Liberals: America's Termites)

A Fine Primer on Evolution for Conservatives and Why They Need to Accept It

I must disagree vehemently - but also respectfully - with my friend Greg Laden, a physical anthropologist who espouses a political point of view radically different than mine, since I regard "Monkeys on Our Backs" as a fine political polemic written to persuade fellow Conservatives as to why biological evolution should be accepted as valid science, and why Darwinian thought is politically more consistent with their political worldview than it is with liberals. It is not a book on science, nor is it meant to be, as both author Richard Tokumei and evolutionary psychologist Satoshi Kanazawa emphasize in its introductory sections (Tokumei, who had this published under this pseudonym, does identify himself as a Conservative Democrat who believes his party has betrayed the very principles which President John F. Kennedy represented with regards to both foreign policy and economics). However, I will note that the chapter devoted to describing how Natural Selection works "A Short Summary of How Evolution Works" is an especially lucid introduction whose only glaring omission is noting how much Darwin was influenced by Adam Smith's thinking on free market economics (A point which another Conservative thinker, noted skeptic Michael Shermer, does emphasize in his "Why Darwin Matters: The Case Against Intelligent Design".). Another notable success is Tokumei's insistence that Darwinian thought does not promote amoral - or immoral - behavior, as many Conservatives, especially those within the Religious Right, might contend, but instead, argues persuasively that "...evolution has allowed us to evolve both the ability and the propensity to seek moral codes and also certain aspects of those moral codes that allow us to live peacefully and altruistically in society with others." Tokumei also succeeds in explaining how Conservative beliefs are substantially more consistent than those of Liberals with evolution from a strong selectionist view, and by that, I do mean that Natural Selection is seen as the primary mechanism responsible for biological evolution. For these reasons "Monkey on Our Backs" is worthy of a wide readership, especially by fellow Conservatives; it is of sufficient brevity that it should be of interest even to prominent Conservative critics of evolution like Ann Coulter and Michele Bachmann.

Nothing new here

I expected more from this. I thought that with all the work done on the human genome recently, he would make some mention of it. But no. What we get is really just some random musings of some guy, and frankly, I could get that in any bar in the country if I wanted to waste my time.

Although it may not sound like it, I actually agree with everything the author says. The problem as I see it is that he never addresses why the Left doesn't have any idea what evolution is all about. I think the answer is that evolution is often spoken of as "this happened in order to do that", like....the eye developed in order to see. Whereas the truth is, something (a proto-eye) developed and, happy accident, the creature that possessed it was able to find more food. This way of thinking leads people to thing that evolution is heading somewhere: a fairer world, a world without violence or whatnot. In fact evolution just wants lots of babies.

I wouldn't bother with this, if you are interested in evolution, you won't learn a thing.

It is no wonder that the author chose to use a pseudonym

Richard Tokumei has written a book that is so bad he is ashamed to put his own name on it. "Richard Tokumei" is the pen name of a 'writer/editor in Southern California [with] degrees in Humanities and Phychology from the University of California Berkeley" and he has produced a book designed to anger everyone who hears of it in order to create needless sensation and thus, sell copies. Which, once people get their hands on, will make rather low quality toilet paper.

Monkeys On Our Backs: Why Conservatives and Liberals Are Both Wrong About Evolution includes an inexplicable mix of "correct" statements about evolution and how to think about evolution along with misuses, abuses, and misunderstandings of evolution that those very statements guard against. "Tokumei" warns against the naturalistic fallacy, but uses it as the basis for his arguments whenever convenient. He repeats statements made by evolutionary biologists that make it clear that evolution is not teleological or goal directed, but assumes it is, and requires goal directness for important parts of his arguments to work. He presents the entirety of evolutionary or biological models, research, discussion, and data regarding human behavior as a simplified and naive "Pinkeresque" view, and this allows him to indicate why liberals hate Evolution. He also presents evolution, or more accurately, Darwinism, using the exact model pushed these days by the Discovery Institute as a straw man for disdain by conservatives. "Tokumei" makes the very annoying statement that Evolution is pretty easy to understand and then proceeds to misunderstand, sometimes willfully sometimes not, it would appear, the process. He hates socialism with utter disdain and never fails to link the term with Liberal policies and 'prove' that these policies are evil. Despite the thinly veiled attempt to paint this book as an even-handed fact-based critique of both the left and the right, it is only an attack on the left, with the critique of the right having little more strength than a piece of used toilet paper left to languish in an unflushed toilet. Which is where this book belongs.

I didn't like it.

But Satoshi Kanazawa did, I assume, because he wrote the forward! Go figure!

In case you are wondering, Tokumei has very few anagrams. Try letter substitution if you want to identify him that way. Waste of time, though. Off hand, the following results could signify: Andrews, Baldwin, Bismark, and Codfish. The book appears to be self published.
