Having worked for two of the largest firms in the industry, he left the Wall Street titans in 2002 to found the Meridian Business Group, a successful portfolio management firm dedicated to performance, safety, and putting his money where his mouth is. Today, Mr. Ponzio manages individual portfolios as well as a private investment fund modeled after the early partnerships of Warren Buffett. His website FWallStreet.com is a popular value investing site and is a permanent link on CNBC.com's Warren Buffett Watch. He lives and works in Chicago, IL.

Value Investing that Emphasizes Cash Flow

I'm certainly glad that the somewhat objectionable title did not dissuade me from reading this book. The title comes from the author's contention that the brokerage and mutual fund industry is driven by their own greed. Thus, their focus is primarily on sales rather than what should be their objective, namely identifying good investment opportunities that will enhance our investment returns. Although I have no disagreement with this viewpoint, I'm pleased to report that a relatively small portion of the book is devoted to this topic. Most of the book is a practical guide to value investing.

The primary thesis can be summarized as follows: "So the key to making long-term gains in the stock market is simple. Figure out which companies will grow and buy them at a cheap price." It is easy to agree with such an objective, but how do we do that? What distinguishes this book from the myriad value-oriented investing books now available is the author's emphasis on the importance of analyzing a company's cash flow characteristics. This is a welcomed viewpoint that transcends the traditional value investor's financial ratios of P/E, P/B, and P/S.

The author describes how Warren Buffett utilized the cash flow concept of owner earnings since the mid-1980s, even years before the cash flow statement became a required corporate quarterly financial reporting document. The author uses Enron to demonstrate the desirability of analyzing cash flows in lieu of reported earnings. The two primary analysis tools espoused by the author are "Cash Yield" and "Buy-and-Hold Valuation". Historical examples using Johnson & Johnson, Coca Cola, and Microsoft are helpful in answering the when to buy? and when to sell? questions. An additional benefit from this book are the interesting, common sensical insights in the areas of portfolio diversification and also "The Psychology That Will Drive Your Investment Success".

The improvements that would take the rating from four stars to five stars would be: (1) Less repetition of a few of the viewpoints provided; (2) Reduce the terminology confusion. For example, "Cash Yield" would be more appropriately termed as "Owner Earnings Yield". The same problem with clarity exists in use of the terms "Buy-and-Hold Valuation" and "Cash Return On Invested Capital"; and (3) Rather than relying solely on historical examples of how to identify buying and selling opportunities, it would also be even more useful to the reader if a specific example of how to use the tools to identify a current worthwhile investment opportunity was provided.

Joe Ponzio Understands and Explains Buffett Better Than Others

Joe Ponzio's "F Wall Street" is a true achievement in clarity and investing wisdom. Over the past 14 years, I have read virtually every book or article or essay written by or about Warren Buffett and Charlie Munger, and nothing captures the value-oriented, fundamentals driven "Focus Investing" approach of Buffett and Munger better than this well written and explained book. Ponzio, who fully gets the irony of his name being similar to the namesake of all pyramid schemes, knows of what he writes, having left high paying jobs on Wall Street disgusted with an industry that has lost any semblance of truly serving the average investor to start his own firm dedicated to providing honest, long-term financial advice to average and well-heeled investors.

Ponzio starts simple, explaining the integral parts of Buffett's "follow the cash" approach to screen truly good long-term businesses from weak ones, then goes on to nuts and bolts of how to properly value a business using discounted cash flow analysis -- all in accordance with Buffett and Munger's advice. He then goes on to analyze how to execute another favorite Buffett approach -- merger arbitrage or "workouts" -- in a way that makes this somewhat more advanced tactic accessible to the more ambitious individual investor.

What sets F Wall Street apart from other books is it's clear to read style, and its ability to boil down essential and somewhat complicated value-investing concepts into easy to understand principles -- much like Buffett himself in his annual letters to shareholders. But Ponzio is not just another commentator -- he is a true practitioner of Buffett's art, with a comparatively short-term (a few years) but so far impressive results in his portfolio based on the approaches espoused in the book. The blog offers much of his principles for free and is worth visiting, but the book is well worth the price for bringing all the principles together in one place and bringing the reader through the base-logic all the way through the more advanced concepts in a logical progression.

In my view, having read all of the books on Buffett from Hagstrom to Mary Buffett to Lowenstein, this book does a better overall job of capturing the nuts and bolts of Buffett and Munger's approach, though the others are worth reading as well to round out one's knowledge of Focused Investing.

A Gem of a Book!

I have read many books on investing; my favorites include Graham's Intelligent Investor and Security Analysis as well as Fisher's Common Stocks and Uncommon Profits. This book ranks right there among them. In a clear, concise manner Mr. Ponzio takes the reader through the steps required to understand investing, value businesses, and purchase securities. Appropriate for beginning investors, but with valuable information for even the most seasoned- I highly recommend this book! If you are looking for a place to start learning about investing, purchase this book and Graham's Intelligent Investor. If you have read a ton of books about investing, you still need to read this book!

The English Faust

Not everybody knows Faust(us). But a lot do. Most readers know this tragic personnage who allied himself with the devil and finally paid the price for his betrayal of God from a famous play written by J.W. Goethe. It was him who wrote the most famous version of Faust's history. (If you want to know more about Goethe's work, please visit my reviewer page.) But he wasn't the only dramatist who considered this lost magician worth a tragedy. Exactly 2 centuries and 1 year before Goethe published his work, a play by the Englishman Christopher Marlowe saw the light of the world.
Marlowe and Goethe are different personalities living in completely different times so that it's no wonder their plays vary in character. Goethe lived in prosperity and had all his life to think about subjects like human nature, social relationships, history and its influence on the present, love, religion and much more. He was a philosoph, and that's the reason why Goethe's "Faust" is sometimes difficult to understand because you have to dive under the surface of things to understand their true nature. Marlowe's work is different: This man was certainly very intelligent and knew a lot about the forces that moved the world, but, unlike Goethe, he didn't have a lifetime to think about one single play. You can imagine that Marlowe's "Faust" became more shallow, but still not shallow enough to be ignored by this imaginary institution we call World Literature. As a compensation, Marlowe's work contains more life and action in it, something I can't say about Goethe's. Both men were geniuses. In this review, I'd like to pay my tribute to the Englishman.
As stated above, the play tells the story of a medieval scientist who allies himself with the devil. The latter promises to serve the first in this world, whereas Faust must do the same in hell. The poor doctor doubts his choices because it's his soul being sold, still he follows the devil and has the time of his life. I beg your pardon, for I feel the need to return to Goethe to show you another important difference between both versions: Whereas Marlowe's Faust wants the devil to provide him with fun and all richness of the world (materialism), Goethe's alter ego feels the importance to be educated by the devil to get a complete picture of the world. At the end, Marlowe's Faust realizes that all experiences weren't worth his soul. He begs God to save him, but it is no longer possible. The devil tears his body apart and takes his soul with him to infinite sufferings.
The effect this play had on me was tremedous. Fascinated, I watched Faust's development. I particularly liked the 5th act where he realizes that all is finally lost. You can really feel his pain in those scenes; the effect is unbelievable.
So, if you want to be touched by human tragedy, I really advise you to read this book. It's done very quickly, so you needn't worry about the time it takes. If you want to make a step further and find additional material on Faust, read Goethe's "Faust 1" as well as Thomas Mann's "Doctor Faustus". It's a marvelous novel and the most modern narration based on the medieval German scientist named Johann(es) Faust(us).

The Best Retelling of the Faust Legend

In the Faust legend, a man by the name of Faust or Faustus sells his soul to the devil for twenty-four years of worldly power. This legend has been told many times over by such writers as Goethe and Mann, but no doubt the most famous retelling, and probably the best, is the play, Doctor Faustus by Christopher Marlowe.
The most prominent influence on Marlowe's version of the Faust legend was the social upheaval during the time period in which it was written. Doctor Faustus was probably first performed in 1594, a time of tremendous change in Europe. The Medieval times were over and the Renaissance was beginning, however, influences of both times can be found in the play. Doctor Faustus is a transitional play where beliefs from both time periods intermingle, sometimes with disastrous results.
Doctor Faustus, himself, is a man torn between two traditions. He is a man with medieval beliefs, but renaissance aspirations. When he first attempts to conjure Mephistopheles, Faustus believe that Mephistopheles was forced to come by his (Faustus's) words. In response, Mephistopheles says, "for when we hear one rack the name of God, abjure the Scriptures and his savior Christ, we fly in hope to get his glorious soul." Mephistopheles has, of course, come of his own accord, because he feels that there is a soul to be had. He states this blatantly, yet Faustus is clouded by his old beliefs and also by his desires.
From a medieval point of view, Doctor Faustus can be looked upon as a morality play; a play about one man who aspires beyond his God-given place in the world. On the other hand, from a renaissance perspective, this play is a tragedy. The Renaissance was a time of individuality unlike the Middle Ages where a man was trapped in whatever social class into which he was born. Faustus is "an essentially good man" by Renaissance ideals who believes he has reached the end of human knowledge and is thus justified is using the black arts to further his knowledge. As in most classical tragedies, his downfall is complete and is due to his pride.
After Faustus makes his deal with Lucifer, the question must be asked: Is there any way back for him? Faustus believes he is damned at the moment that he signs his name in blood, although he has many chances to repent during the course of the play. The first chance comes after his first conjuring. He says, "O something soundeth in mine ear, 'Abjure this magic, turn to God.' Aye, and Faustus will turn to God again. To God? He loves thee not." Something is pleading for Faustus to repent, but Faustus remains firm in believing God has already condemned him. Each time the Good Angel appears is yet another chance for Faustus to repent, but the Evil Angel continues to threaten him if he even thinks about repenting. If it were not possible for Faustus to save his soul, then the Evil Angel and his demons would have simply left Faustus alone to cry out in anguish to God.
The final indicator that Faustus could have been saved at any point over his twenty-four year bargain is given by Mephistopheles, himself, as Faustus's fate is sealed beyond irrevocability.
Christopher Marlowe's brilliant retelling of the Faust legend springs not only from his own creativity, but from the times in which he lived. Marlowe's life and times allowed him to create the greatest retelling of one of Western cultures more timeless stories. When put to words, the legend seems so simple, yet its possibilities and implications, as Marlowe proves, can be nothing less than monumental.

Yes, the English Renaissance CAN be humorous!

Christopher Marlowe is a genius. This thorough, Oxfordiancompilation of his best known plays contains Tamburlaine the Great parts one and two, the Tragical History of Doctor Faustus in its original A-text and its later B-text, The Jew of Malta, and Edward II. The beauty of these dramas lies in the fact that they're short but powerful reading pieces. In five acts Marlowe was able to generate a story complete with action, classical allusions, and a bawdy humor one might not expect from otherwise generally classified stuffy English Renaissance drama. This book contains an exhaustive introduction that explains many details of the publication dates of the plays and the differences between versions (Faustus). It also contains a thorough section for notes that further explain the texts. Finally, it contains a glossary of the commonly used words from the texts. The bottom line? This book is a great read--it's funny (I can't begin to stress that enough), and you will appreciate Marlowe's wit and talent just as much as William Shakespeare did. Buy it today!

About the Author
S. Christian Albright received his B.S. degree in mathematics from Stanford in 1968 and his Ph.D. in operations research from Stanford in 1972. Since then, he has been teaching in the Operations and Decision Technologies Department in the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University. He has taught courses in management science, computer simulation, and statistics to all levels of business students: undergraduates, MBAs, and doctoral students. His current interest is in spreadsheet modeling, including development of VBA applications in Excel. Dr. Albright has published more than 20 articles in leading operations research journals in the area of applied probability. He has also published a number of successful textbooks, including DATA ANALYSIS AND DECISION MAKING, DATA ANALYSIS FOR MANAGERS, and SPREADSHEET MODELING AND APPLICATIONS.

Wayne L. Winston is Professor Emeritus of Decision Sciences at the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University and is now a Professor of Decision and Information Sciences at the Bauer College at the University of Houston. He has won more than 45 teaching awards, including the school-wide MBA award six times. His current interest is in showing how spreadsheet models can be used to solve business problems in all disciplines, particularly in finance, sports, and marketing. In addition to publishing more than 20 articles in leading journals, Dr. Winston has written such successful textbooks as OPERATIONS RESEARCH: APPLICATIONS AND ALGORITHMS, MATHEMATICAL PROGRAMMING: APPLICATIONS AND ALGORITHMS, SIMULATION MODELING WITH @RISK, DATA ANALYSIS FOR MANAGERS, SPREADSHEET MODELING AND APPLICATIONS, MATHLETICS, DATA ANALYSIS AND BUSINESS MODELING WITH EXCEL 2013, MARKETING ANALYTICS, and FINANCIAL MODELS USING SIMULATION AND OPTIMIZATION. He received his B.S. degree in mathematics from MIT and his Ph.D. in operations research from Yale.

Christopher J. Zappe earned his B.A. in Mathematics from DePauw University in 1983 and his M.B.A. and Ph.D. in Decision Sciences from Indiana University in 1987 and 1988, respectively. Since 1993, Professor Zappe has been serving as an associate professor in the decision sciences area of the Department of Management at Bucknell University (Lewisburg, PA). He has published articles in scholarly journals such as Managerial and Decision Economics, OMEGA, Naval Research Logistics, and Interfaces.

Better Title: Intro to Statistics using Excel Add-ins

On the positive side, this book has many excellent case studies and examples. It is well written and interesting. However, I was disappointed, as I was expecting use of Excel to rigorously solve decision making and data analysis problems. The focus of the book is mostly traditional statistics solved using a group of commercial add-ins for Excel. If this is what you want, then the book would get five stars. However, for data analysis and decision making, I think a more thorough treatment using Excel without relying so much on the add-ins would have been appropriate.

Strong Software Addition:

This book was put together in the same 'spirit' as previous other Winston books; good examples, well thought out attack approaches; as well as a good summary of all the types of problems encountered in the text! I have several other of Winston books, so I'm reasonably happy with his work! I am growing a little frustrated with winston et al. over the fact that they offer no solutions or answers to the many exercise problems contained throughout the text. I don't think Winston realizes that professionals outside of the classroom are buying these books and don't have the luxury of a professor sharing answers to the problems. This is where I think he can improve. The software addition, from palisades was an excellent addition to the text! I had already owned many of the commercial versions but have found that the suite, provided with the text, was just as robust as my retail versions.

Very good book but software is a source of troubles

The book itself is an exteremely good source of theory and problems. However, accompanying software is a reason for many disappointments. There are undocumented bugs and compatibility issues. Some supporting material for the book is still not available and customer support could have been better.

About the Author
"S. C. Garg, PhD (University of Delhi), is Professor of Physics at School of Sciences, Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), New Delhi. Earlier he was Pro Vice Chancellor of IGNOU and Founder Director of Centre for Learning and Teaching, National University of Lesotho, Roma, Southern Africa. Before joining IGNOU in 1989, he was with the Department of Physics, Hindu College, University of Delhi for about 12 years. With more than three decades of teaching experience in India and abroad, Prof. Garg has co-authored four textbooks in physics at the undergraduate and Masters levels. He has published several research papers in national and international journals and guided several students for their PhD degree. Having been a member of academic councils and management boards of several universities in the India and abroad, he has wide experience in planning and development of curricula and learning materials for different groups of learners. His areas of research are Theoretical Reactor Physics and Physics Education. R. M. Bansal, PhD (University of Delhi), is Associate Professor, Department of Physics, Hans Raj College, University of Delhi. He has more than three decades of teaching experience and has been a member of several committees tasked to revise physics courses. His areas of research are Theoretical Solid State Physics and Neutron Transport. C. K. Bad Production Quality

The content of the book looks pretty solid. It's just that random words and parts of words are missing. Symbols in equations are missing. Usually you can infer what was supposed to be there, but sometimes not. Its very very annoying. I don't mind McGraw Hill or Amazon selling a defective book at a discount, but they ought to be up front about it. This is a bad production run.
