The scourge of drug addiction has swept across South Africa in recent years, affecting every level of society. The use of tik, particularly in the Western Cape, has skyrocketed over a short period of time, unlike anything else ever experienced. It was Abie Pakkies’s addiction to this drug and the horrendous impact it had on his and his family’s lives that drove Ellen to murder. Her trial exposed the dark underbelly of a community crippled by drug and alcohol abuse and focused attention on the plight of those who live in poverty and do not have recourse to drug rehabilitation centres and other measures effective in the treatment of drug addicts.
Dealing in Death looks at the global and local drugs culture, the predicament of Ellen Pakkies and other mothers like her, and an impoverished community and the apartheid laws that gave birth to it.

The chilling truth

This is the chilling truth of the effect tik/ice has on the lives of the addicts, but most of all also on the lives of the immediate family. What is shocking is the lack of support from the government side. Living now in a first world country and looking back on where I came from, I can empathize with the desperation Ellen must have felt. No where to turn, no where to hide. I can only hope that this book will be used in knowledge sharing programs in schools and youth groups. I wish Ellen all the best - she is still living in a community affected on a daily basis by tik.

A Good Argument for the Abolition of All Sequels

I read Joseph Heller's CATCH-22 on a rainy day, with nothing to do but gaze at the novels my father had collected over the years. Plunging in to avert crushing boredom, I discovered what all readers before me have, the absolute brilliance of it. CATCH-22 is one of the finest war novels I have read, surpassing even M*A*S*H* and THE SHORT-TIMERS in its audacious mix of humour, horror, and insanity. I also was overwhelmed by the fact that this was Heller's first novel. When I completed it, I rushed to a second-hand bookstore to buy CLOSING TIME. I had become such an instant fan of Heller's work, that it never crossed my mind that some things are better left alone.
Why, oh why, did Heller pen CLOSING TIME? CATCH-22 did not need a continuation. It was lightning in a bottle, a once-in-a-lifetime event that could never be repeated. But Heller, late in his career, decided, for better or for worse, that Yossarian and Milo Minderbinder had lives worth examining yet again.
The plot begins with Yossarian (whom I desperately wanted to meet after finishing CATCH-22) in a hospital, now older, still bitter, but unfortunately, not funny. As the labyrinth storyline progresses, Yossarian bumps up against a plethora of eccentric characters, both old friends and new enemies. There's the Chaplain (who can produce heavy water from his bowels), a president addicted to videogames, a bizarre wedding coordinator with dreams of the ideal society wedding within a decrepit bus station, and Milo, the schemer extrordinaire, now trying to sell invisible bombers to clueless generals. All this, plus a subplot in an underground playworld that may or may not be Hell.
Why doesn't this work? Part of the problem, I believe, is that CATCH-22 had a genuinely insane setting in which to place its insane characters. The comparison of war with mental imbalance may not be new, but CATCH-22 made it fresh and invigorating. CLOSING TIME finds Heller without such a setting, frantically trying to create insanity where there was none before. It's not enough to simply show nutty people; they need a context in which they can flourish. CLOSING TIME doesn't provide them with one.
Is it fair to keep comparing CLOSING TIME to CATCH-22? Probably not, but Heller invites the comparison. Reading CLOSING TIME is akin to attending your high school reunion. You meet all the people you once knew and loved, but despite your being glad to see them, you leave in a sonewhat depressed state. You've grown up, but they haven't. They were fun in school, but in the real world, you can't wait for them to leave you alone.

A good book on the effects of growing old in modern society

Judging from the reviews on this page, it seems to me like most (but not all) of the negative reviews are from people who were merely expecting more Catch-22. Some comment that Closing Time has nothing to do with Catch-22, some that it is merely a poor rehashing of the material from Heller's earlier work, thus implying that the content is effectively similar, albeit inferior. I suppose I'm lucky not to be a Novel Nerd, because it seemed to me that Closing Time does an excellant job of what Heller set out to do: show us the effects of time, age, and society on young people with strong ideals and direction. The meandering reminicences of Yossarian and the others are not shoddily constructed prose, they are the sounds of old men trying to put their past into the context of what their present has become, and vice-versa.
If I could offer any constructive negative critism of this book, it would be that the surreal juxtaposition of concrete life, the military, and Hell seemed somewhat ill-defined, and as a result Heller's conclusion to the novel lacks some of the conviction that it could have had.

It amazes me how so many of the questions we as women face were answered in this book. She gave different testimonies, scriptures, points of view, scenarios, and even heart-wrenching questions. I've always known Karolyne Roberts to be a woman of God and to have God's Holy Spirit dwelling within her. After reading this book, it was only a solid confirmation of what was already evident: that she hears from The Lord and she writes when He prompts her to. This book was written for me, married women, single men, the widowed, all people. Her release came at a time in my life in which God was shifting and doing a whole lot of revealing. "The One" Revealed aided me in this huge change in my life, as well as comforted, encouraged, sharpened and equipped me to keep pressing forward despite the changes one may experience in God's plan for their life. Each chapter is filled with God's love, grace, correction and discipline and is literally the best book I've ever read in...awhile. Pray before purchasing and put on some steel-toed boots. You'll need them. Devour each page with an open heart, prepare to be challenged and then go purchase a copy for a friend. It's literally that amazing!

"The One Revealed" deserves more than 5 stars, because it has made an eternal impact on myself and other women, which is what truly matters. I was blown away by Karolyne's book. No matter what season you are in - whether you are single, dating/courting, married, divorced, widowed, searching, dissatisfied, confused, content... this book has the wisdom, encouragement and insight you need at this moment in your life. Karolyne's book doesn't focus so much on asking God for your "Boaz" but seeking God's kingdom and righteousness while believing that all that is in the will of God shall be added to you in His timing. I have so much clarity as to how I should be led by the Holy Spirit and not by my feelings when it comes to relationships. Seriously, every woman should pick this book up and read it if you are looking for answers to questions about God, love, dating, marriage, and the like. As you read this book, you will come to find that it echoes a powerful truth: Jesus is the One, our One and only. It is only through Him that you will know how to date, marry and love the one he has chosen to join you in marriage. Whether it is in His will for you to marry or not, we must be devoted to seeking the One daily and becoming "the one" that we are waiting for, which Karolyne highlights so eloquently in this book. The mineralogists 'bible'

The student edition of Deer Howie and Zussman is the most important mineralogy book that geology students should have in their collection. It provides information that not only helps while learning mineralogy, but becomes an essential and much consulted reference in later years. By limiting itself to the rock forming minerals it provides the solid information for learning real-world mineralogy without the trivial frills. This is the most consulted book on my bookshelf.

An great book. I have the 13th impression of this book published in 1982. We used this book in second year mineralogy and found it very useful not only in mineraology but throughout the remaining years of our geology program at University. The book is easy to use and has all the different groups, ortho- ring silicates, chain silicates, sheet silicates, framework silicates and non silicates and provides information pertaining to properties, crystal structure, chemistry and paragenesis.

This book is an absolute must for anyone working with minerals in any way. Beeing an introduction to rockforming minerals it is very conprehensive. It is very valuable not only as a textbook but also as a handbook in the lab. As the title says it covers the rockforming minerals so dont expect to find exotic minearls. You can though expect to find a relatively detailed introduction to the most important minerals. It far surpasses any student minaralogy to my knowledge.

Great problem book for finals prep

The Examples and Explanations series is, in my opinion, a little less helpful than the Siegel's series as the problems in this book are all pretty short and not quite like the long issue-spotters one ordinarily gets on final exams in law school. The upside of these books, however, is that they have summaries of the concepts you should know as well as problems with explanations for every topic. This means that if you don't quite understand one of the concepts you've been taught (tracing via constructive trusts, for example), you can use this book to supplement your lecture notes. I found the book very helpful in studying for my Remedies exam.

It's worth noting that every law school class will cover different topics in different ways, so this book may not cover some of the topics in as much detail as your professor did. I've found that this is always the case with commercial supplements; you just have to understand that your class won't always be exactly like the book, and learn not to panic when you can't answer a question on a subject your prof barely touched on. At the same time, every Remedies class should cover the basics (contract damages, tort damages, injunctions/specific relief, and restitution), all of which were covered in this book.

I teach Remedies. I used to be a fan of Gilbert's law summaries. Now I'm a fan of Examples and Explanations.

Gilbert's has gotten too long, too complex, and does too little summarizing.

No study aid is a substitute for the classroom. However, E & E can help pave the way to better understanding.

Strong E&E supplement

I have used E&E for just about every class in my law school career. I love the series and have really appreciated the application of the law to different hypos. This book is written in a easy to understand fashion and for the most part breaks down some complicated subjects into common language. All in all, it's a great book and it helped me study for my Remedies class.
