Teach Graphing the Fun, Easy Way!

I borrowed this book from a colleague and found it so helpful that I'm excited to buy my own copy! After a bit of initial uncertainty, which is normal for any new math concept, my 5th graders LOVED creating these quilt squares! To do so, they had to connect ordered pairs with straight lines, then color the resulting pattern by identifying a second set of coordinates. Their individual design squares were then posted together on a bulletin board to form an impressive classroom quilt display!

If you plan to use this book to teach graphing, my only cautions would be 1) that you thoroughly pre-teach all related terminology and basic concepts so that students have an easier time understanding the directions; and 2) that students not be allowed to see the quilt square design they will be creating in advance, because most of them will simply cheat and draw the design through guesswork instead of actually locating ordered pairs, which is the whole point. I would also recommend that teacher and students work together on the same design for their initial attempt, and then, after students demonstrate an understanding of the process, have them do individualized designs (but, again, without knowing what they look like in advance). There are many quilt square patterns from which to choose.

I found two years in a row that my my 5th graders were very ready for this project, but one of our 4th grade instructors also experienced much success teaching her students coordinate graphing with this book. Overall, it provides fantastic practical experience with the 4-quadrant grid system, and practice that's a heck-of-a-lot more fun than typical textbook graphing problems! AND you get a beautiful bulletin board display to boot!!! Two thumbs way up!

My students really bought into coordinate graphing. I am a quilter and this mixed two of my loves together==teaching math and making quilts. I brought some quilts to show the students the design in material and we made a bulletin board quilt.

This book was required reading for a college philosophy class. Unlike other boring textbooks, Salmon's unique approach to teaching critical thinking encourages classroom discussion and the application of practical situations. Each topic is related in text to many real-life examples, famous literary works, and quotes from the great philosophers. This "worldliness" makes Critical Thinking not only interesting, but actively engages the reader.

In a small aspect, a few examples may seem opinionated. When an example quoting the Bible was being debated in class as fallacious, my professor commented, "I like this book... it pushes buttons!"

The most important aspect is that the information will help you in any career. Whether a doctor, lawyer, business person, engineer, or even a scientist, these Critical Thinking concepts can be applied to many situations.
