This is the third book in the Bashir Family Romance Series, but was written as a stand-alone novella focusing on Annika's story.
Annika was an incredibly fun and interesting character to write; she thinks she has it all with her good looks, money and prestigious upcoming marriage to a family-approved lawyer. Perhaps she's so focused on external things, she's never given two thoughts about more meaningful things in life. I wanted to take this frivolous character and throw a lot at her: stuck in a charity hospital in a remote part of India, a handsome doctor who deplores ignorant Americans and rebuffs her attempts to use her beauty to get what she wants, and an orphan or two who show her that having materials things is not all its cracked up to be.
Essentially, I wanted to challenge Annika to see if she can re-discover her humanity and figure out what's important in life, and also teach her the meaning of real love and real passion in the process.

Great read

Annika while in India looking for her brother Dev breaks her ankle. While at the hospital see meets a handsome Doctor who thinks she is nothing more than a materialistic American. There is more than meets the eye for the characters in this book. Annika not only opens her heart but she realizes that what she once loved can not compete with the true feelings of being in love.

Not just a short trip to India after all

What happens when you take a princess away from her kingdom and show her there is more to the world than handbags and clothes? This story takes Annika on a journey of self-discovery as she meets real people in a charity hospital in India. It is a pleasure to watch her walk away from her shallow nature and embrace people who have nothing, she learns that just because you have money does not mean you have happiness.

Along the way she falls in love with the young doctor who cares she is in and together they open each other's eyes to things in life they were missing. This was a great read.

Don't judge a book by it's cover. . . .

I have fallen in ♡ with KC's writing style and sank into her first two books from this series pretty easily.
I have to admit I was a little uncertain when i heard the next book was going to be about Annika because she had come off as shollow and self conceded but this book reminded me to not judge a book by it's cover! I learned a whole new side to this little Indian princess and learned how big of a heart she had.
KC did it again too! She had me tearing up while reading this story but also had my heart going ninety to nothing :-) thank you for ANOTHER great read Kennedy Claire!

Rosabeth Moss Kanter will convince you that the goal of winning is not losing two times in a row. In her view, success and failure are not events, they are self-fulfilling tendencies. "Confidence is the sweet spot between arrogance and despair--consisting of positive expectations for favorable outcomes." says Kanter, a Harvard Business School Professor and author of The Change Masters.

Drawing on more than 300 interviews with leaders in business, sports and politics, Kanter cogently explains the role confidence plays in the performance of institutions and individuals. Losing streaks are often created and then perpetuated when people lose confidence in their leaders and systems, while winning streaks are fueled by confident people who are secure in their own abilities and the ability of their leaders. Winning streaks are characterized by continuity and continued investment, Kanter argues, while losing streaks are marked by disruption and a lack of investment that typically give way to a self-fulfilling prophecy of failure. Combining theory with practical advice, Kanter details how losing organizations can instill accountability, collaboration and initiative—Kanter's three pillars of confidence—to help start a turnaround. She illustrates her ideas with a number of real-world examples, among them how the new owner of the Philadelphia Eagles stopped the team's chronic losing ways and built a winning organization. Professional gamblers are very aware of the power of winning streaks and losing streaks-- and that elusive attribute that differentiates the two: confidence. Individuals, sports teams, companies, and entire nations create moods so contagious they create self-fulfilling patterns that can persist for decades. When Kanter spoke to leaders of streak-prone organizations, it was consistently the winners that wanted to share their experiences. (It seems no one wants to be slapped with the "loser" label.) But the Chicago Cubs consistently came up as the example of the organization with the most infamous losing streak, and although the players deny that the brand influences them, the constant reminder from media and fans keeps the jinx alive. She also looks at the factors necessary to create a turnaround, where strong leadership is essential, as recently exemplified at Gillette and the Philadelphia Eagles. It's been said that "confidence builds nations" and although this is primarily an examination of self-reinforcing cycles, Kanter shows how we as individuals and groups ultimately have a measure of control over our responses to circumstance. "patience" --needed to read this book from begin to end

I had great expectations of this book as it started out OK. But soon (within a couple chapters) I realized that the author had run out of new things to say. While there are some non-fiction authors that can captivate and entertain an audience with a single concept (ie... Gladwell w/"Tipping Point/Blink"), this author's writing style seems unusually laborious and repetitive -- languishing in incomprehensible detail. Sad to say, but I think I would have been better off just reading a synopsis of this book.

This book is boring, tedious, and thoroughly uninspiring

I can't believe the average customer review is greater than 4 stars! This book was a chore to read; I will admit that I could not drag myself throught he entire text. And I mean "text". This book was written like a textbook. I felt I back in college slogging through my required reading. This book was written as if someone did a whole bunch of research (using many different grad students of course), then tried to compile all the data into a book. The problem is, anybody can do that, but few can do that well. The writer loses the reader in all those details, forgeting to stick to the basics, highlight them with interesting examples, and repeat them often. I know she probably thinks she did this, and she did, just not well. I've never seen such an interesting topic made so boring.

Know-how for architecting Internet-based software systems

Non-functional requirements, i.e. the many software -ilities, are often neglected in the development of software systems. Even though they are a key factor in final user satisfaction and everybody acknowledges their importance, their prominence is usually downplayed. This book tries to fill this gap and it focuses on balancing the non-functional features of Internet-based software systems.

"Architecting Enterprise Solutions", following the so-called patterns movement, is organized around a set of patterns, which are classified into four groups:

1. Fundamental patterns describe the basic shape for Internet-based systems, why they tend to use application servers and why they recur to "specialist peripherals."

2. Performance, availability, and scalability involve some kind of redundancy (e.g. the performance-related patterns involve tiers with redundant elements, load balancing, data replication, and effective resource management, such as pooling and caching).

3. Control patterns deal with system manageability and security. Status reporting, monitoring, alerting, logging and dynamic configuration are key for manageability, while the proper use of demilitarized zones, firewalls, intrusion detection systems, encryption, and public key infrastructure are fundamental for security.

4. Finally, evolution patterns address maintainability, flexibility, portability, and migration. Among other things, here you will find information on virtual platforms and staging environments.

A final section describes how the patterns can be applied in practice, illustrating how the patterns trade-offs can lead to different system configurations.

In summary, "Architecting Enterprise Solutions" collects the know-how of experienced system architects. For the Titans, not to everyones

C. Arnold made a very realistic review about this book. In past years I've been working a lot at on architecture subjects and read this book was like having a nice chat with someone on a high level than me where I careful pay attention on every single word said to me, doesn't matter if already have some knowledge about, it is nice to conciliate the knowledge.

Could take decades to someone get the experience of the authors of this book. As I said to pinguinu:

"Even if they talk something about JAVA, I could identify all the things to work with .net. In the end it is a platform independent subject and such things stays forever on the shelf.
This book is for the Titans, not to everyone! It was a wonderful 3 weeks times until the end of the book."

The book is also a treasure trove of other resources. If you have been touched by tragedy or want to better prepare yourself for when tragedy hits, this may well be the book for you.

More than 150 tribes across America have members who engage in some form of gender identification beyond "male" and "female." Roscoe's study reveals how integral these third and fourth genders, and same-sex marriage, have been to the tribes' societies, in contrast to the intolerance demonstrated by the Judeo-Christian culture of the descendants of European invaders. His analysis of these tribes, rooted in the empirical evidence of their histories, also provides a fascinating counterpoint to theories about homosexual identity rooted solely in modern, Western preconceptions.

By starting with life experiences of some individual male and female berdache, Roscoe literally captivates readers, before carrying us into the comparative, theoretical, analytical second half which is sophisticated but clearly written. Will Roscoe's work on North American berdache/"two spirit" is far and away the most theoretically sophisticated and historically systematic work in a burgeoning field. While many people have been pawing at a few historical records and fantasizing a great deal, he has systematically gone through a multilingual literature, showed how the discourse unfolded in specific European national traditions, and sorted out continuities and discontinuities in space and in time (both in the discourse and in the phenomena of Native American cultural survivla, insofar as it can be glimpsed through Christianity-distorted lenses).

Although Roscoe's primary focus is on historical records of "berdache," he has also discusses contemporary "gay Indians," building on his earlier book _Living the Spirit_. My only regret is that Roscoe did not include his article "Was We'Wah [the Zuni "man-woman' he wrote an earlier book about] a homosexual?" in this book. _Changing Ones_ is the single indispensable book on the subject of gender and sexuality of Native American gender-mixing roles.

Two-spirit people limited to homosexuality?

The book was an easy and enjoyable read. Roscoe makes the historical documents and stories a lot more accessible than just an offering of dry comments. I loved how he related the two spirited of then to those of today and how he discribed the many forms of discrimination they must face both then and now.

The only issue I find with this book is that, although he states that historically those of two spirits were not necessarily homosexual, nor were they limited to the activities of one gender over another but many times participated in both, he doesn't mention modern day two spirit people who identify as bisexual except in the context of a modern "problem", alongside alcoholism, drug use and prostitution. He does this while alluding to bisexuality being accepted historically and stating how some two spirit people had children, which at the time, was impossible without both genders being involved.

I find it interesting that although Roscoe is doing humanity a service by providing this kind of education to all as well as liberation those two spirit who may still feel alone in their reservations amid so much persecution; he is shortchanging the very essence of the Two Spirit person, denying ALL it's many shades. This only perpetuates the poisonous discrimination the gay movement has fought so hard to dismantle, yet keeps alive within it's own community.

In this aspect, I would consider this writing as the gay community has considered many of the first writings on homosexuality- up to a certain point, discriminating and ignorant. However, besides that it's an excellent book considering what is available out there.

A fantastic resource on Native American 3rd/4th genders

Will Roscoe has compiled a wonderful and invaluable overview of a long-neglected topic. As he notes in the introduction to this volume, our language is currently burdened by an archaic and often unhelpful lexicon in addressing 'third and fourth genders' so commonly encountered in pre-Columbian North America. This book includes a compilation of the historical and current literature, and readers will find the extensive Glossary and the Tribal Index to be of great use as a source for further investigation. Boxed set offers bonus portfolio of more photos

I bought this boxed set as a gift for my daughter, first for her to read and second for her to have to read to her children as they become old enough. I have reviewed each volume as it was published.
The boxed set includes a small portfolio of more pictures of the sort that grace the pages of each volume, which makes buying the boxed set, now that it is available, a better idea than purchasing each book separately. As I have wondered about this series and at least one other, I don't see this as truly YA genre. I mean, yes, intelligent 'tweens and teens can read and love it, but it is, overall, pretty heavy and heady stuff. In short, this is as much for adult fans of alternate reality/history as it is for its purported target demographic. Buy it, you'll love it.

I would like to comment on the quality of the books themselves

I recently purchased this boxed set of Miss Peregrine's Peculiar Children for myself. I am excited to finish these before the movie comes out. I don't want to review the writing as I am no expert but, I do want to say that I am thoroughly enjoying myself with these books. I would like to comment on the quality of the books themselves. Over my years as a reader I have found the quality of books themselves declining. Most often the pages are either thin and flimsy or rough and grainy. It has been years since I have seen a book with evenly cut pages! this set of books is beautiful! The quality of the paper is wonderful and the pages are cut perfectly I know i will enjoy these fooks for years to come. They are a wonderful addition to my home library!

A very good set of books

I was happily surprised at how much I enjoyed reading these books. I read the set in 4 days, I enjoyed it that much. Well written, entertaining and well paced. Mr. Riggs was able to suspend my disbelief with interesting characters, entertaining situations, colorful descriptors and comic timing. While I am much older than what I assume the target audience is, the story was able to capture my interest and hold it. I would recommend this set to young, old and in between, alike. I am betting, you won't be disappointed.

Omits important concepts

The book is a nice way to get started with Android development on Xamarin platform. It provides concise overview of the Android platform and has clear instructions for setting up development environment. It also goes through building a small application so the readers build a simple but working application.

However, the book omits too many important concepts in order to qualify for a good book. The most important one is fragments. In order to build even a simplest app you need to have a good understanding of fragments. Fragments are also required for building tablet optimized apps.

The book also gives a bad advice for using configChanges which as explained at [...] is a bad thing to do in most of cases. Instead the correct approach is to use Fragments and retain an instance.

All in all the book provides a very general overview of Android development and if you are serious about building Android apps (either with Xamarin or other platform) you should also read another book for a better understanding of Android platform.

Great first step into the world of Xamarin.Android

I really liked how the book started out with an introduction to the Android platform and some technical insight into the architecture of Xamarin.Android and its integration with the platform. It gave me a nice foundation to build upon during the remainder of the book. The author decided to organize the chapters around a single application, building it from start to finish, while gradually incorporating new features. I found this approach engaging and easy to follow by building that same application while reading.

For a book targeting existing C# developers, it started a bit too slow in my opinion, spending too much time on the basics if IDE. Even though Xamarin Studio is being used, it is similar enough to Visual Studio and shouldn’t require much attention. Once that was out of the way, the chapters nicely focused on individual Android specifics, such as building the UI, handling the navigation and working with sensors. These subjects are what .NET developers really need to transition to the new platform and the book does a good job at it. The book concludes with some basics about application deployment; again very useful for those, not already familiar with the platform.

There were a couple of topics I missed in the book. In particular more information about testing the applications on actual devices and some guidance on how to best take advantage of existing resources for Java Android development when working in Xamarin. It would also be very useful to include some recommended development practices for reusing code between platforms and handling Android specifics.

Nevertheless the book is a great first step into the world of Xamarin.Android for a seasoned .NET C# developer with no previous development experience on Android. It’s definitely enough to get you started and makes it much easier to decide whether this is the right way to build Android applications or not. It certainly convinced me to use Xamarin.Android for my first Android application.

Warning: No Chapter Links, and make just wet your appetite.

Other kindle tech books contain helpful links to the beginning of each chapter. For the PC viewer, these links are available in the contents tab of the black toolbar, usually on the left hand side of the page. These links make navigating through the book easier than always going back to the Table of Contents at the beginning of the book.

This book also seems rather short. I have owned this book for only 24 hours, and I am already 43% through it. I am not a speed reader, and I have been doing plenty of other things as well. The first third of the book is devoted to "Getting Started". The writing style is easy to read, and looks reasonable, but so far I haven't seen much depth, and make leave you wanting for more.
