Este es un relato genial de la tragicomedia que es vivir en USA, lleno de historias jocosas en que con su humor negro, el autor relata el dolor de sus humillantes y brutales trabajos fisicos que contrastaban fuertemente con la vida comoda que tuvo en su pais natal. Este libro es una perfecta descripcion de los que es para un latino entrar al reino Americano del acelere y la ansiedad.

Excelente libro. Altamente recomendable. No se lo pierdan los que han vivido en USA y quieren recordar lo que hemos vivido en este pais, o los que desean viajar para que puedan saborear un poquito de lo que les va a tocar en USA.

Helpful but far too many typos and/or errors

This book was one of my first intros to Bash programming. It made it interesting, but far too many of the script samples didn't work, due to typographical errors. (Such as some of the while loops in chapter 10) It took a bit of researching to figure out why, however, researching the errors was also helpful. (As I am still a rank novice at bash scripting, there might have been other, easier ways to fix them, but for example, the timing loop didn't work until I changed $counter=$counter+1 to counter=$counter+1)
The book is quick reading and a reasonable introduction to bash programming, with the caveat that the reader will probably have to know how to research deja, linuxdoc.org or other places to figure out why some of the scripts don't work as printed.
I notice that some other reviewers pointed out errors to IDG. It would be nice if they had an easy to find page listing such errors, ala Sybex's site. There may be one, but when it's not easy to find, I just went to the various linuxdoc.org howtos and guides and found my answers there.
My only other complaint is a petty one, that sometimes the author could have pointed out alternate syntax that also works. However, as we all develop our own coding habits, that is a fairly meaningless complaint.
All in all, I would recommend the book to the novice bash scripter, as long as the novice is ready to, at times, search the web a bit to find out why some scripts don't work properly. The trouble is that since the book is aimed towards the novice, scripts that don't work properly due to minor typos might be frustrating at first. Still, this is good practice--for example, after awhile, I could look at one and say, aha, this won't work, he left out a "do". It's an excellent supplement to the online guides at linuxdoc.org and reasonably priced.

vi is very poor choice of development tool

This version is really out of date. vi is very poor choice of development tool. This book speaks only about the command line interface and how limiting it is, when currently there is Ubuntu and Minty (and others). It is far enough out of date this it is not very useful.

I'll also echo other comments by saying it should be called Bash Scripting for Dummies.

About the Author

Phillip B. Crosby has had 39 years of hands-on experience as a quality management professional and an executive. While with Martin Marietta he created the concept of ZZeroDefects. During 14 years as Vice-President of the ITT Corporation he was responsible for quality worldwide in 87 divisions. In 1979 he founded Phillip Crosby Associates, Inc. (PCA), which became the world's largest quality management consulting firm. Each year 20,000 executives and managers attaend the Quality College of PCA.

In 1991 he retired from PCA and now serves as Chairman of Career IV, Inc., in Maitland, Florida, spending his time working with those who would become executives, and speaking to groups.

His other books include Quality is Free, Running Things, The Eternally Successful Organization, Let's Talk Quality, Leadeing, and The Art of Getiing Your Own Sweet Way.

Timeless Classic

Unlike some of Crosby's books, where the material is getting very dated, this one is pretty timeless. Phil was a good author, with an approachable style and easy read. Where this book differs is that he makes extensive use of vignettes and other stories to demonstrate management principles that are as relevant today as when the book was written 25 years ago. I would recommend it to any manager.

A Quality Carol

In Quality Without Tears, Crosby adds new layers to his original "zero defects" philosophy. He offers fourteen steps for quality improvement in teams.
Let's look at one of them, Step 6, "corrective action." The common problem with "corrective action," says Crosby, is that people don't understand what the term means.
Suppose, says Crosby, that you suddenly found a grizzly bear in your back yard: "The answer would not be to set up an armed camp to protect yourself from the bear. This is the sort of action that takes place when parts of an organization are given a shoot-to-kill license. All that results is a lot of yard that can't be used and several dead bears."
Corrective actions have to begin by identifying the source of the bears.
Another step is Zero Defects Day: "Many people rarely have exciting days at work . . . A well-planned, dignified, Zero Defects Day on which management understands what it is talking about is a delight that will be remembered forever."
Recognition also plays a role. An organization recognizes people who can serve as "beacons." These are the people who shine so brightly that they help keep everyone heading in the right direction:
"Many managers feel, somewhat cynically, that people are being paid to do their jobs and that's that. This attitude reflects an insensitivity to people that is a trademark of many hockey-style managers."
To drive his philosophy home, Crosby cites an unusual case study:
In "A Quality Carol," Emory Spellman falls asleep on a bus. A spirit appears and takes him to see his deceased partner. The partner is repairing thousands of defective items that their company has made.
This is punishment ...
"... For being the cause of the hassle other people had to live with. For not preventing these things by being interested in quality."
The apparition warns:
"All these years, you have treated quality like something you could take in or take out. Well, unless you change your ways, you are going to wind up right next to me, forever and ever, twenty-four hours a day. No time off, no visitors, no meetings ---- just all the problems you ever caused."
Predictably, three more visitors appear.
Quality Past is a former college professor who wants to retract something he had taught Emory. The misinformed lesson was to cut corners on quality.
Quality Present appears as a woman who tries to sell him on the quality vaccine. Failing in that, she brings Emory's customers to him through a television screen. One after another comes into view with a litany of complaints about the company's products and services.
When Quality Future enters, Emory finally sees the light. The final and most portentous visitor is a "severe looking person carrying a briefcase and dressed in a black three-piece suit." He has just bought the company from a bankruptcy court.
Emory returns later in the book and applies Crosby's methods to avert that fate.

A man with conviction

Philip Crosby is widely recognized as a quality pioneer for the concepts he drove homw with Quality is Free and Quality Without Tears. After reading, Quality Without Tears, I was struck by how deep a conviction he held that his concepts were valid. It's easy to say that now that they have become widely accepted, but it takes a visionary to act that way when they're a somewehat new approach.
The concepts which Crosby developed were a extension of the work of Dr. Edwards Deming (who also has published a bunch of books) and Crosby's work seems to be the basis of the later Six Sigma approach that proved to work so well.

Excellent, Comprehensive Text Book on Shark Biology

Anyone who has studied sharks is familiar with the respected work of Dr. Peter Klimley. A true pioneer in shark research, Pete has spent decades conducting groundbreaking studies on their mysterious lives. His passion for sharks and rays is evident throughout The Biology of Sharks and Rays, which offers an accurate, up-to-date, and comprehensive review of all realms of shark science. From evolution and physiology to behavior and conservation, the book is an impressive achievement. It is loaded with black-and-white and color illustrations and photographs, tables, and graphs, including many drawn directly from the primary scientific literature. It is appropriately technical, but still very readable, and filled with anecdotes and personal reflections from the author's extensive experience. But Klimley is quick to acknowledge that "This book is really not my book but is the fruit of the arduous work of many dedicated scientists who have worked with these wonderful creatures..."

I highly recommend the book for college and graduate students interested in sharks, rays, and skates. It would make an excellent reference text for shark biology courses. The book may also be enjoyed and useful to more casual shark enthusiasts as well as established shark experts. As a shark scientist myself, I am excited to have this useful reference at my fingertips.

Excellent New Textbook

This textbook offers a refreshingly comprehensive treatment of its subject. What I liked most about it that unlike many textbooks, it trusts readers with the complexities of the biology of sharks and rays from the get go - there isn't a lot of "fluff" taking up space before you get to the content, and yet it's far more readable than a scientific manuscript. The illustrations and diagrams are wonderful. A great book for students, professors, or armchair shark enthusiasts.

I have long admired the work of Dr. Klimley, and it is a real treat to peruse and read through the collection of chapters which provide a detailed and accessible tour of the evolution, behavior, morphology, behavior, and conservation of sharks and rays. Some of the highlights of this work are the attention to detail and the references to real published research by the world's experts, including a lovely assortment of figures and tables based on actual data. Klimley's decades of experience as a leading and thought-provoking shark researcher really shine through in this book, and its anecdotes and personal stories really make the book a treat to read.
