About the Author

International Master John Watson is one of the world's most respected writers on chess. His groundbreaking four-volume work on the English firmly established his reputation in the 1980s, and he has produced a string of top-quality works since. Lot of information but you better have a board and a notepad

I own vol 1 and vol 2 of this series. The notations are written in symbols and show the destination move only. In order to make it through any of the lessons (at least for me) a board with coordinates and graph paper (I use Excel) to break out all the information are necessary. Buy this book if you are willing to make that commitment but if not look elsewhere.

This is a must have book along with volume 2. It begins with fundamentals and goes into details carefully. Notation is clear and it is easy to read.

Something for everyone

Watson has done another fantastic job with this addition to the chess world. I am rated 2100 and my son is 1400 yet I found there was much to be learned for both of us. I found the chapter on structure significance to be most enlightening. Of course anything in this book will be helpful for class B players and below, but there is enough breadth of information to allow even A players and above to gain more knowledge as well. I would have liked to have seen a chapter on the Scandanavian, but the explanations of similar structures with regards to other openings somewhat covers this. Watson does not skimp on providing the reader with basic ideas and plans, an important part of any book with regards to openings. Watson makes no claim as to knowing all the opening variations and their subsequent evaluations. He equips the reader with a basic and general understanding of the main plans and structures, and advises the reader to pick up "specialized" opening books for those openings that you are drawn to. 4 stars for leaving out a couple of basic e4 responses, otherwise its a perfect piece of literature...well thought out and well written.

About the Author

Yogic Mystic, Mark Griffin, the founder of Hard Light Center of Awakening, was a student of Swami Muktananda of the Siddha Yoga Lineage who, in turn, was a disciple of Swami Nityananda. Mark Griffin is a Westerner who was born in the '50s in the Pacific Northwest. Mark's studies in art and music brought him to the San Francisco Bay area where he met his Guru, Swami Muktananda, in 1976.

After six years of full-time immersion in the study of meditation, Mark encountered a milestone of extreme spiritual significance-entrance into an advanced state of consciousness known as Nirvakalpa Samadhi.

Very shortly thereafter, Muktananda died. Great teachers of the Kagyu tradition came to Mark's assistance, and he received continued instruction in maturing and stabilizing his abilities in meditation from Kalu Rinpoche and Chogyam Trungpa.

Mark Griffin founded the Hard Light center of Awakening in 1989, and continues to teach in Los Angeles, California.
