Practical, To-the-point Requirements User Guide for Managers

Ivy F. Hooks and Kristin A. Farry give their audience a clear methodology about how to eliminate rework and unnecessary features rooted in poor requirement definition for making product development or procurement faster and cheaper without sacrificing the better. Good requirement definition is more important than ever to especially fast-paced high-tech companies for which researching, developing, and commercializing products on schedule and within budget is key to be, become, and remain competitive. Interestingly, Hooks and Farry explain to their readers the profound impact that culture, education, and management have on requirement definition. Their critical examination of the "seven cultural forces that define Americans" in chapter 2 helps their (foreign) audience better understand why some (American) marketers have no time to do it right the first time, but endless time and a company bankroll to do it wrong over and over again to quote Kevin J. Clancy and Peter C. Krieg in their excellent Counter-intuitive Marketing. Hooks and Farry remind their audience that nothing can change for the faster, cheaper, and better without a management commitment. Management must make very clear through their entire organization that quality products begin long before design and manufacture. These products find their genesis in quality requirements. To summarize, Customer-Centered Products is a must read for anyone involved/interested in product development or sourcing. The only weakness of the book lies in the concentration of examples from a few industries about which Hooks and Farry are very knowledgeable.

One of the best product books on the market!

Hooks and Farry show you how to get it right the FIRST time, providing practical, easy to follow directions to achieve what every company wants - faster, better, cheaper products that are SUCCESSFUL. This book explains product management from an engineering perspective that is as practical as it is useful (unlike other books that put too much 'marketing spin' on product management, making it seem more like some mystical process). 3/4 of the way through this book I called the authors, and they are now coaching our entire company on this philosophy. And it's working!

Great book which can be easily applied

I am working on a key project and needed methodology to improve
how we specified the product we wanted. I found the book to be very useful and we are applying its methodology to our current project with great success. Only improvement might be additional info on what software is available to do requirements planning for smaller, non-software, related projects.

Louann Brizendine, a neuropsychiatrist at the University of California, San Francisco, explores groundbreaking issues in brain science with mixed results. Critics debate the author's presentation and research; some extol her many and varied sources and the book's accessibility, while others take her to task for relying too heavily on anecdotal evidence and "dumbing down" the text (Robin Marantz Henig cites the author's repeated use of "cutesy language" and slang). Despite the critical ambivalence, the author certainly has the credentials to write this book. Brizendine graduated from the Yale University School of Medicine and draws on research done at the Women's and Teen Girls' Mood and Hormone Clinic, which she founded at UCSF in 1994. So the question is, do you require step-by-step proof for conclusions some consider controversial, or are you willing to take her word for it?

Neuropsychiatrist Brizendine acknowledges she may be going out on a lonely limb by asserting that males and females have distinctly different brains. She says that, in addition to certain hard-wired dissimilarities, male and female brain chemistries differ in being powered by hormones so potent they can reshape each gender's conception of reality (which in no way is related to ability). Thanks to advances in noninvasive imaging technology, such as positron-emission tomography (PET) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scans, scientists have been able to quantify the effects of hormones on brain receptors. They have also been able to study how and when surges of specific hormones "marinate" the brain, affecting everything from gender education to sexual responsiveness to aggression. Brizendine doesn't rule out socialization as a factor in gender identification, but she insists that biology must take at least half the credit. What with nearly 70 pages of references to the research upon which she constructs her argument, out on a limb Brizendine may be, but who's left to hand her a saw? Donna Chavez

THE FEMALE BRAIN

I chose this book to gain an alternative insight into myself as a woman. But more importantly, I felt that traditional methods of evaluating women from research methods employed in sociology, psychology, economic, financial, geo-political, politico-economic, socio-economic, and legal studies were clinically and practically valid but fragmentary and non-integrative with the biomedical model. I could favor a holistic diagnosis method too. However, there had to be a neurologically-based intelligent method of evaluating and understanding women. I mean, the Creator had to have an intelligence behind our nature. It was a simple matter of employing them properly. Feminism sought to liberate women from the sin, incompetence, and fallacies of Freud as well as other fallen misunderstood interpretations of women's biology, biochemistry, and psycho-biological and hormonal complexities. I was an avid lover of herbs and aromatherapy but could not afford to invest in those branches of education in order to cultivate an alternative understanding. I could not afford to learn all different religious interpretations either.

I found it ironic that feminism wanted to divorce themselves from fallen teachings of traditional psychiatry and other fallen neurological interpretations in order to prevent misdiagnosis. However, by eliminating the discipline of neuroscience and neuro-hormonal studies altogether, women can be disempowered by lacking the tools and insight to treat themselves and modulate their brain and bodies which are the true tree of life (more than a sanctuary). Women need to know in other historical contexts not mentioned in this book that ancient ancestral females were intelligent enough to time their hormones which is the core of female intelligence validated through this book.

I recommend all clinicians, parents, mental health professionals, teachers, religious leaders, and individuals read this book regardless of your faith-based upbringing. This book may either validate your teachings or challenge your original assumptions and prejudices you never knew you had.

It is not a mystery of why women are the way they are. Definitely buy this book!

A Must Read for Husbands and Fathers

This is an outstanding book! It is very well written and researcherd. I only wish I would have read it before I married and had four children. It would have saved me many unnecessary arguments, and it would have taught me to be patient with my children, particularly my two daughters. It has, however, prepared me for future in-law children and grandchildren.

Brizendine gives incredible insight into female behavior, based on advancements in nuerology. She explains everything from the monthly emotional turbulence in women to why they possess extraordinary skill in relationships, communication, motherhood, and spousal forbearance. She also teaches us what to expect in every phase of life from the troublesome teenage years to motherhood to menopause. The references alone are worth the price of the book. I highly recommend it.

Great Insights for both Men and Women

I read this book years ago and still remember some of the insights I learned from it. I bought and read the sequel "The Male Brain" and found that book equally informative about people's behaviors. I heard the author interviewed on various NPR programs, including Terry Gross' "Fresh Air" and my local public radio station KQED's program "Forum". This book and its "companion" "The Male Brain" should be delightful reading for parents, their teenage and adult kids and college freshmen, who must navigate life's challenges on their own as newly minted, liberated adults in the fast-moving, evolving environments in colleges (and universities), especially if they live on-campus or away from home (off-campus housing). These books can be used as "self-help" books are budding adults, whether they are young men, young women or young couples. Long-term couples and their parents can benefit hugely from reading this book and its companion.

About the Author
Jerry Scutts has worked in the field of aviation publishing since the late 1960s, writing over 40 books that have covered a broad spectrum of subject matter ranging from US Navy floatplane fighters in World War 2 to the exploits of the USAF's Phantom IIs over Vietnam. His specialist areas are the Luftwaffe and the US Army Air Forces in World War 2, and he originally appeared on the Osprey list as long ago as 1977, when he wrote the second volume in the now much sought after Air Cam Air War series –- many of the jacket illustrations in this series were also painted by him. Jerry has been a regular contributor to Osprey's Aircraft of the Aces series since its inception in 1994.

GOOD START FOR THIS SERIES

This series began well with this book by Jerry Scutts. It is really difficult to cover in one short volume all the aces that flew P-51 with the Eight air Force in WW II, and Scutts tried to give the reader a general view of their tasks and accomplishments. covers items already addressed in other books. does not cover them as thoroughly though. Not really about non standard sngs. Just a rehash of material that is covered better elsewhere. 40% of the book is dedicated to hand quizzes. Truly a fluff piece and not worth buying.

Very interesting original!

Well, after reading Secrets of Sit n Go's I decided to take a look on the sequel of it, Secrets of non standard Sit n Go's.

It's a very good book too, but it is special because it deals with topics not easily found elsewhere. Make sure you know what this book is about, if you are interested in it, this one is unique in its kind. Sit n Go's for other poker forms are not played widely, but for those who want to try, this one is a must!

Again (like Secrets of Sit n Go's) highly recommended to the ones interested in its not-so-mainstream topics.

As gimmicks go, it’s a good one: each month of 2010, one title in the 12-book Conspiracy 365 series will be released. The ticking clock (or calendar, in this case) is introduced immediately when a strange man accosts 15-year-old Callum Ormond on the street, shouting, “Get away! Hide and lay low until midnight December 31st of next year.” It’s good advice, because the following day, January 1st, includes a boat wreck, shark attack, and helicopter rescue—and that’s just for starters. Soon Callum is fleeing unknown assailants who are framing him for the attack of his little sister and uncle Rafe (a shady character himself). It all has to do with something called the Ormond Singularity and a group of sketches Callum’s father gave him before dying of a mysterious illness. This is the kind of stuff that stretches credibility with every page, but continual time updates (“12:00 a.m.,” “12:13 a.m.,” etc.) at least create a sense of continual motion. The conclusion offers no answers, just the requisite cliff-hanger. Grades 4-6. --Daniel Kraus

On December 31st, fifteen year old Callum Ormond heard his
name being called by a stranger he didn't even know.
Before he could run away he shouts out to him "They
killed your father. They're killing me! You must go into
hiding until December 31st next year." After hearing
those devastating words, he must uncover the mysterious
history of his family and do so by using the few clues his
father left behind. Now being framed for a crime he didn't
commit, Callum is the most wanted fugitive and not just by
the authorities. While Callum races against time to
uncover the secret, he must also be aware of the people
who are willing to get to him by any means necessary. Will
Callum uncover the dark secret which his father died over?
Will he even survive the next 365 days?

Wow.. that's all I pretty much have to say about this book!
It got directly to the point at the beginning, and it started picking up
pace immediately. It sort of reminded me of a Bourne
Identity, but the story is totally different. It was
definitely a quick read because it only took me a couple
of hours to read, but it sure keeps you on the edge of
your seat. I definitely think this book is a best seller
series in the making, and anyone who likes books with tons
of action and a mysterious twist to it will really enjoy
Conspiracy 365. I would recommend this for ages 12 and
up.

Serial novel for teens

Although Kane/Miller Publishers are very familiar to me for some of the wonderful and unique picture books they have imported from around the globe, I was completely surprised by the content and concept of this new series. So many books leave you begging for more, but the publishers haven't so cleverly set up a monthly release date for a 12-book series as Kane/Miller has. A teen's "24' (television show), I love the idea of a serial book or novel, which is actually not a `novel' idea. According to Wikipedia, many of Charles Dickens' novels were published as serial installments in a magazine.

Although some of the drama was a bit too far-fetched to be believed, this book was hard to put down. You also have to be a diligent reader because, being a serial in nature, there will not be any tidy ending until the last installment in December 2010. But, I look forward to seeing if this series can sustain the momentum.

And, as with all of the latest chapter books, it has its own website. Unfortunately, all contests are for Australia and New Zealand residents only, but the site content is available for everyone.

Twisted and Driven

Author Gabrielle Lord has set quite a task for herself: she has to write 12 fantastic action novels for teens during 2010. That's one a month, and they're all part of a huge conspiracy novel that has multiple parts, secrets, betrayals, treachery, and one mystery after another. The series is being billed as a 24 for teens.

The first novel, Conspiracy 365 January, starts out with a bang. Fifteen year old Callum Ormond `s life is in constant jeopardy, first from a storm, then a life jacket that doesn't function right, and finally by sharks that circle him and attack.

And that's just the opening chapter, folks. After that, things turn wicked. Callum's father is dead, passing away after a lingering illness that mentally drained him. At the end of his days, Callum's father was tied to a bed, watched over constantly, and spent his lucid moments drawing sketches that no one understands and everyone seems to want. Man, I was totally sucked in by everything Callum's facing, and I know he's not going to catch a decent break the rest of the year. Just like Jack Bauer has those incredibly long days.

Callum finds out about the sketches, but before he can get his hands on them, his Uncle Rafe manages to get away with them. Since it was Uncle Rafe that got their boat into trouble in the storm, I didn't like the guy from the get-go, but things get worse the more Callum explores. Even though Uncle Rafe is his father's twin, the two of them couldn't be more different.

After figuring out that his uncle knows more about the "Ormond Singularity" (whatever that is) than Callum does, our hero tries to outwit his uncle. Unfortunately, his dastardly uncle isn't the only one searching for the secrets Callum's father left behind.

Once Rafe ended up getting shot with his own gun and Callum's little sister ends up in a coma, I knew things were about to turn worse. In no time at all, Callum is the most wanted young fugitive around - and wanted by just the police. His mysterious enemies are closing in as well.

Through it all, though, Callum's good friend and electronic wizard Boges hangs with him. I like the friendship the two have, but the pacing is just too tightly constructed to show much of it. Still, there are eleven books to go.

The books are very stylistic as well. Chapters cover the days, sometimes only a page long, and sometimes they mark the passage of a few days. The individual chapters are also broken down by time stamps that keep the clock ticking for the reader. Another interesting twist on the book is that the pages are numbered backward, so you're always reading down to page 1. The device has been done before, but I doubt today's young readers have seen it, or that they will be any less intrigued by it than I was the first time I saw it done.

The book is incredibly fast-paced, so even reluctant readers and boys who'd generally rather play video games will probably get sucked up into the story. Plus, with one coming out every month, they won't have long to wait before another novel shows up.

If Callum survives. The last time I saw him, he was trapped in a barrel that was filling up with oil!

An Important Book - For Makers and Education Policy Makers

I just finished reading The New Shop Class by Joan Horvath and Rich Cameron. This is an important book. Given all of the recent interest in making, and in related technologies like 3d printing, this book is very helpful to those who are looking for guidance in how to get started, and where to go for information. I read The New Shop Class on my Kindle. In the Kindle version there are links to helpful resources, and it was very easy to click on the links to research more deeply into the areas addressed in the book. I really appreciated this feature.

Regarding 3d printing, Horvath and Cameron provide detailed description and explanation of the 3d printing processes that currently exist, as well as the materials needed, and safety and cost issues. As they mention in the book, there is a steep learning curve involved in 3d printing. However, The New Shop Class is very helpful in providing ample resources for finding the answers that will help newbies.

The New Shop Class also discusses the rise of makerspaces and hackerspaces that are opening around the country. The book points out that many of these spaces are being opened in libraries and museums. If you are at all interested in learning how to do this stuff, you will find the direction given in the book regarding makerspaces and hackerspaces invaluable! Starting in 3d printing, I ran into several roadblocks that would have been very difficult to get around if not for the help I received from people at places like these.

The discussion regarding makerspaces and hackerspaces leads to another question implied by the book: Why are public schools and education policy makers not embracing this movement? I have been teaching in the Los Angeles area for over thirty years. In that time I have seen the closing of almost all of the shop classes and industrial education courses in the second largest educational institution in the country, and I know this has been a pattern in most of the school districts in the state of California. Now there is a movement in which students can learn STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math; some folks add art into the mix, calling it STEAM) subjects by actually doing, and they can do this safely and relatively cheaply, and in a way that is accessible to all students. Yet, rather than enacting state or district mandates to incorporate STEM and STEAM into the curriculum through making, it seems that it is up to individual teachers to incorporate these methods of learning by making in their individual classrooms, or it is left to the few motivated and knowledgeable parents who do this to enrich their own children's education.

Helpful and fun resource for parents and educators of future Makers

While the title of this book implies that it is written for educators, it is also an invaluable resource for any nontechnical parent who wants to nurture their child's interest in 3D printing, Arduino, and other current technology trends. The book strikes a balance between instructional chapters that cover the fundamentals of these technologies (in unintimidating, layperson terms), as well as real-life case studies that show how kids and parents can find the support required to further develop such Maker skills.

The tone of this book is consistently helpful, fun, and supportive. As the mother of a daughter, I also appreciate that the author shares some of the challenges she encountered as she pursued her own educational and career goals in a traditionally male-dominated field, and provides resources for advice and support.

The book is very helpful! I think it's written so simple, that a child over 9 years old could read it and understand it. It points out a lot of things that we all kind of know, but just never thought about.
I think it's worth it having it in your library.

About the Author
Frank Slootman served as President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) from mid-2003 through the acquisition of the company in the summer of 2009. Prior to Data Domain, Frank held executive technology management roles at Borland and Compuware Corporation. A native from The Netherlands, Frank started his career with Burroughs Corporation in Detroit. Today, Frank is the Chief Executive Officer of Service-now.com in San Diego.

An overnight success six years in the making

Frank recounts an amazing success story whose foundation involve basic principles that when considered, seem self-evident and obscenely obvious. Silicon Valley overflows with well pedigreed startup mentalities with huge egos and agendas that can easily defocus and lead to failure, but Frank lays out principles that any startup can grasp and apply immediately. Data Domain was not an overnight success but in a relatively short time you can learn the common sense secrets of a true Silicon Valley Legend. I had the privilege of working with Frank during his Borland years and much of what he wrote was very visible in the success of Borland at the beginning of the decade.

Deeper Respect

So my wife worked at DD and through her vignettes I was amazed at what Frank and the company did. Now seeing it through Frank's eyes I have a much deeper respect for what he and the company did (all the while juggling running chain saws) in an ever-changing environment anybody in the Silicon Valley high tech community is somewhat familiar. If you checked your ego at the door, you'll get immense value from this book. If you forgot to check your ego, the essence of the book will be lost on you. Really amazing.

A Great Little Read!

Frank Slootman's play by play account of the Data Domain acquisition, IPO, and general culture is not only eye opening but also entertaining.
TAPE SUCKS is the type of text you can read while on a quick flight or perhaps in a couple sittings. But I would suggest reading it twice as there are some gems interspersed throughout the book. The RECIPE approach to operations and customer service can be adapted to any organization and is a winning "recipe".
Perhaps you are an EMC or DD loyalist, hater, or you have never heard of either; TAPE SUCKS is still a fun book.
