About the Author
S. Christian Albright received his B.S. degree in mathematics from Stanford in 1968 and his Ph.D. in operations research from Stanford in 1972. Since then, he has been teaching in the Operations and Decision Technologies Department in the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University. He has taught courses in management science, computer simulation, and statistics to all levels of business students: undergraduates, MBAs, and doctoral students. His current interest is in spreadsheet modeling, including development of VBA applications in Excel. Dr. Albright has published more than 20 articles in leading operations research journals in the area of applied probability. He has also published a number of successful textbooks, including DATA ANALYSIS AND DECISION MAKING, DATA ANALYSIS FOR MANAGERS, and SPREADSHEET MODELING AND APPLICATIONS.

Wayne L. Winston is Professor Emeritus of Decision Sciences at the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University and is now a Professor of Decision and Information Sciences at the Bauer College at the University of Houston. He has won more than 45 teaching awards, including the school-wide MBA award six times. His current interest is in showing how spreadsheet models can be used to solve business problems in all disciplines, particularly in finance, sports, and marketing. In addition to publishing more than 20 articles in leading journals, Dr. Winston has written such successful textbooks as OPERATIONS RESEARCH: APPLICATIONS AND ALGORITHMS, MATHEMATICAL PROGRAMMING: APPLICATIONS AND ALGORITHMS, SIMULATION MODELING WITH @RISK, DATA ANALYSIS FOR MANAGERS, SPREADSHEET MODELING AND APPLICATIONS, MATHLETICS, DATA ANALYSIS AND BUSINESS MODELING WITH EXCEL 2013, MARKETING ANALYTICS, and FINANCIAL MODELS USING SIMULATION AND OPTIMIZATION. He received his B.S. degree in mathematics from MIT and his Ph.D. in operations research from Yale.

Christopher J. Zappe earned his B.A. in Mathematics from DePauw University in 1983 and his M.B.A. and Ph.D. in Decision Sciences from Indiana University in 1987 and 1988, respectively. Since 1993, Professor Zappe has been serving as an associate professor in the decision sciences area of the Department of Management at Bucknell University (Lewisburg, PA). He has published articles in scholarly journals such as Managerial and Decision Economics, OMEGA, Naval Research Logistics, and Interfaces.

Better Title: Intro to Statistics using Excel Add-ins

On the positive side, this book has many excellent case studies and examples. It is well written and interesting. However, I was disappointed, as I was expecting use of Excel to rigorously solve decision making and data analysis problems. The focus of the book is mostly traditional statistics solved using a group of commercial add-ins for Excel. If this is what you want, then the book would get five stars. However, for data analysis and decision making, I think a more thorough treatment using Excel without relying so much on the add-ins would have been appropriate.

Strong Software Addition:

This book was put together in the same 'spirit' as previous other Winston books; good examples, well thought out attack approaches; as well as a good summary of all the types of problems encountered in the text! I have several other of Winston books, so I'm reasonably happy with his work! I am growing a little frustrated with winston et al. over the fact that they offer no solutions or answers to the many exercise problems contained throughout the text. I don't think Winston realizes that professionals outside of the classroom are buying these books and don't have the luxury of a professor sharing answers to the problems. This is where I think he can improve. The software addition, from palisades was an excellent addition to the text! I had already owned many of the commercial versions but have found that the suite, provided with the text, was just as robust as my retail versions.

Very good book but software is a source of troubles

The book itself is an exteremely good source of theory and problems. However, accompanying software is a reason for many disappointments. There are undocumented bugs and compatibility issues. Some supporting material for the book is still not available and customer support could have been better.

About the Author
"S. C. Garg, PhD (University of Delhi), is Professor of Physics at School of Sciences, Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), New Delhi. Earlier he was Pro Vice Chancellor of IGNOU and Founder Director of Centre for Learning and Teaching, National University of Lesotho, Roma, Southern Africa. Before joining IGNOU in 1989, he was with the Department of Physics, Hindu College, University of Delhi for about 12 years. With more than three decades of teaching experience in India and abroad, Prof. Garg has co-authored four textbooks in physics at the undergraduate and Masters levels. He has published several research papers in national and international journals and guided several students for their PhD degree. Having been a member of academic councils and management boards of several universities in the India and abroad, he has wide experience in planning and development of curricula and learning materials for different groups of learners. His areas of research are Theoretical Reactor Physics and Physics Education. R. M. Bansal, PhD (University of Delhi), is Associate Professor, Department of Physics, Hans Raj College, University of Delhi. He has more than three decades of teaching experience and has been a member of several committees tasked to revise physics courses. His areas of research are Theoretical Solid State Physics and Neutron Transport. C. K. Bad Production Quality

The content of the book looks pretty solid. It's just that random words and parts of words are missing. Symbols in equations are missing. Usually you can infer what was supposed to be there, but sometimes not. Its very very annoying. I don't mind McGraw Hill or Amazon selling a defective book at a discount, but they ought to be up front about it. This is a bad production run.

The postmodern novel was a surprisingly and often poorly understood phenomenon of the 1980s and 90s, in which many artists explored issues of how art represents the world. About the Author

Linda Hutcheon, O.C., is a professor of English and of the Centre for Comparative Literature at the University of Toronto who has published in the fields of literary theory and criticism, opera, and Canadian Studies. In 2000 she was elected the 117th President of the Modern Language Association, the third Canadian to hold this position, and the first Canadian woman.

This book holds its own with the best of Cynthia Rylant's "Henry and Mudge" titles (S & S) in terms of writing and illustration. Distillation of Course Worth Thousands, a Real Gem

I just took the executive sales training course that this book summarizes, essentially a "CEO to CEO" sales course but applicable at any level of direct sales, and I cannot say enough good things about the author, the book, or the training--my last twenty years literally passed before my eyes as I understood his key points: purchase decisions are made by individuals on an emotional "what's in it for me" basis, and then justified on a rational "what's in it for the organization" basis. Any sales effort that attempts to stress features and capabilities, as 99% of all of us have been doing, is destined to be lethargic and hit or miss.
The author and his team have a formula and it is a formula that is already working for me: listen instead of talk, solve instead of sell, and a few others that are only offered in the course not the book.
The author is devastating in critiquing what he calls "puffery", all those now meaningless phrases about "best in class" and so on.
Finally, the author is extremely effective in helping truly good executive sales people do a cost analysis that at its most brutal, makes it clear to the client that what they are buying or not buying now is costing them a great deal more than what you are offering as a solution to *their* problem, which in turn justifies your getting top dollar because the return on investment in your more expensive capability, with no hidden costs, is greater than the return on the cheaper or partial solutions.
I strongly recommend the book for a taste of how to do soft selling in a client-friendly manner, and I strongly recommend the three-day course which is where they walk you through the entire process of creating mission statements, benefits to the client, listening probes, and closing statements that pull it all together.
It will take more than one course to overcome 20 years of coming at it the wrong way, but if you are seriously interested in dramatically changing your tone, your approach, and your relationship with your best clients, start with this book and then go on to one of the courses.
This was, incidentally, as an executive, my first formal training since 1986--20 years ago, and as I finished it up, I could only wish someone had shown me this path ten years ago or before.

Finally an ethical book on the art of persuasion

As a professional salesman of 15 years I'm constantly searching for information to help me get an edge. The older I get the more I've realized that an "edge" in the sales world is simply building a firm understanding of and consistently applying the basics to the art of sales.
"Soft Welling in a Hard World" by Jerry Vass is a quick-read but filled with powerful, ethical and usable tactics designed to help you understand your buyers while gaining significant credibility in their eyes.
If you're like me you have a handful of dog-eared, highlighted gems that you keep on your night stand. Mr. Vass has earned a spot in the company of Frank Bettger, Dale Carnegie, Norman Vincent Peale and Napolian Hill.

WOW! Wish I'd Had This 20 Years Ago Myself!

Thank you Jerry for a no-non-sense aproach to the "art & science" of selling. I picked up the 4 cassette tape set on "Soft Selling in a Hard World" on Ebay and put the tape set away for 6 months.
