Speech textbook

Cerritos College, Norwalk, California Speech communication department uses this textbook. Their department Chair was student of the author of this textbook. When depart chair was only a grad student at CSUF the professor who helped the department chair of Speech Department with her thesis for graduate degree was the author of this book and at the time Professor at CSUF graduate school. This is great book to learn from. Other than the readings, which I am reading Chapter 4 Keys to Understanding Cultural and Ethnic Identities, it's good to have other activities in class to help digest all the theories from the book with interactions in classroom amongst students.

Well worth a look

I'm teaching a class in intercultural comm that uses another text. Within naming names, I'm really not fond of the other (widely used) book and have been very grateful for the strong comm. focus of this option. Although I'm using it as a supplementary text for developing course materials and lectures, I plan on using this as the assigned text when the opportunity for change arises.

I purchased thsi book for my Intercultural Communications Class, but I got a lot more out of than what we covered in class. This is a great book for anyone that travels for business a lot or who finds themselves in an intercultural marriage (as I am).

About the Author
Kathryn Daugherty began writing in 2005 when back surgery sidelined her from other activities. She felt it was the perfect time to follow her dream of writing. Kathryn began her writing journey by taking an online romance-writing course. Following her class, she attended conferences and workshops, continuing to improve her skills. Her sister Linda inspired her first published short story, White Lies. The story appeared in the Secret Attic, a publication from the United Kingdom in May 2007. Kathryn’s second taste of success was with a short story titled Secret Alliance. The story placed first in the Short Story contest and was published in the November 2007 issue of Writers’ Journal Magazine. She also received honors at the All Iowa Writer’s Conference in 2012, 2013, and 2014 with her short stories. Having success at the short story level motivated her to complete her first novel A Case of Hearts. Published in 2013. She has now moved forward to her second novel She Promised Her Heart which is the first in a three book series. Although Kathryn did not have the opportunity to go to college, she is grateful to her father for encouraging her to learn to type. Her father always said that her typing skills would serve her well. Since she has worked at a variety of careers throughout the years, she is appreciative of her father’s advice. Typing skills have not only proven to be useful in many of her previous occupations, but they have allowed her to pursue her passion for writing. Kathryn lives in central Iowa, with her husband, Cliff. They have a blended family of five grown children and several grandchildren. Jessie, a seventy-five pound German wirehair pointer who believes he’s a lap dog, rules the house.

This one will pull at your heart strings

She promised her heart is a wonderful second book by Ms. Daugherty. Primarily set in the present, this book does a fantastic job of weaving together two love stories set decades apart. The writing is fluid and does a wonderful job of balancing the love story with some very "real" stories from Vietnam. It gave me an education of that time that I had only ever imagined. Having relatives that served during this time, but never talked about their experiences, helps to now understand why. I loved this book from start to finish and can only hope there is a sequel in the works.

Move over Nicholas Sparks, you've got competition!

I'm tough when it comes to doing a review no matter who the author might be. That said, I had reservations about doing this review when I was recently asked to read this novel. In fact, I'm not even sure why I did decide to do it. But I was furnished a hard copy, which I like, and started reading the evening the book was received. Honestly, I couldn't hardly bring myself to put it down. This novel is an easy read and flows well with great characters that are also well described. It's a heartwarming love story that spans decades for a long-lasting love of two people who had too little time together during the Vietnam war, as well as a young engaged couple with their own relationship problems. I think the way this author weaved the lives of the two couples together was really nice with a happy ending, as expected in any love story (though I don't know why). But what impressed me about this book was the author's writing of Ham's stint in Vietnam, and his experience while serving in that battle. She had to have been given direct information about those events, or at least I think so. And to get an ex-Vietnam vet to discuss their time in that hell hole would be a major feat for any writer to do. Without giving anything away, I can only say I highly recommend this book. I'm definitely glad I had a chance to read it. I'll be watching for future books from this author. Any avid reader should do the same.

Kathryn Daughterty Writes Another Great Romance!

Kathryn Daugherty does it again! She's created another page turner with She Promised Her Heart.

It was relatively easy to pick up She Promised Her Heart after reading Kathryn's first novel, A Case of Hearts. Kathryn's second novel tells the story of Dr. Isabelle Kelly who promised her heart to an Air Force Captain just before he left for his second tour of duty in Vietnam. After telling her love story to a complete stranger on a first-class flight to Omaha, their lives will never be the same again.

She Promised Her Heart is a heartwarming story that's easy to read and keeps you guessing. Kathryn also pays tribute to the men and women who served during the horrific Vietnam conflict by aligning true details and events throughout the story. I must say, she really did her research to bring these pieces to life in her novel as well. It makes you understand fully how awful the conflict truly was and how brave friends and family members were to serve during that time.

Though the story jumps around a bit throughout (from past to present), I was amazed at Kathryn's ability to tie everything together and keep me reeled in. If you're looking for another great romance novel, you got to check this one out! Anxious for Kathryn's next novel! :)

A short, but very nice chronicle of what's wrong with our banking system and an important piece for anyone who still believes the narrative sold to people during and after the 2008/2009 housing crash.

Startling

If you want to read a book on how the Fed, the government, and Wall Street are bedfellows in clear, concise, and understandable terms, then read this short book. It's eye opening, written by a person who was there, has integrity and credentials, and can explain things so anybody can understand. That's why the stock market keeps going up and up, but, the United States will have to pay the piper someday. Excellent reading for those who want to know.

A Highly Engrossing and Accessible Account of the Decay of our Economic and Political System

If you want to understand how the biggest theft in world history took place, I highly recommend this book. I've read other accounts of the Financial Collapse of 2008 that left me scratching my head, but Ms. Tavakoli has a fluid and accessible writing style that allows the reader to understand what happened, why it happened and how it is likely to happen again. This book is enraging since it clearly demonstrates how a bunch of pompous sociopaths managed to privatize rewards and socialize risk in the banking sector, while producing nothing of value to the public at large. The executives at Goldman Sachs, J.P. Morgan Chase and the other Too Big To Fail institutions should be rotting in prison for their crimes, but instead are protected by a political and regulatory system that is bought and paid for by their political contributions. It's a shame that the American Taxpayers are too stupid to force these criminals to be subject to justice for their crimes.

One word? BAD

Usually I love this type of book, but not this one. April was so stupid. Her boyfriend kissed another girl, so she went to a party with him. He made out with same girl at the party, she disappears with strange motercycle man. Her boyfriend sleeps with same said girl, she goes to a graduation party with him. I could barely make it through two chapters, much less finish the book. April was so stupid.

The only reason this book didn't get five stars was because I was just amazed at all of the typos in the book. It also had passages where it would have a word, and you would have to guess what word was actually supposed to go there. I was very disappointed in that. Other that the horrid typos, it was a good story. I did feel like the way April and Jesse would one minute be civil to each other and the next minute be bitter enemies was just a little too much. I felt like it dragged on too much. That truly are my only complaints of the book. And I truly should not be complaining about the typos because after all, it WAS a free book. Thank you for that!

Needs work..

The book was poorly edited. There were wrong words (two instead of too), missing words, misplaced words and spelling mistakes that kept me from enjoying this book. The story is about 2 people from different sides of the track who fall in love and then end up apart. Circumstances bring them back together with obstacles to overcome while dealing with their feelings for each other. It wasn't anything new but it could have been an enjoyable read if the editing was better.

Over-Priced but Probably Worth It

Book was expensive considering the shape it was in. The former user had marked up the book with numerous underlinings and notes. Also the appearance of all the pages and cover was quite shabby. Perhaps this was the last hard cover copy of this book available anywhere. Considering this may have been the case, I was pleased to have gotten the copy despite the over-pricing.

WATTS DISCUSSES PHYSICAL LOVE, SPIRITUAL RESTRICTIONS, AND THE WORLD AROUND US

Alan Wilson Watts (1915-1973) was a British-born philosopher, writer, and speaker, best known as a populariser of Eastern philosophy. He and his then-wife left England for America in 1938 on the eve of WWII, and he became an Episcopal priest---but he left the priesthood in 1950 and moved to California, where he became a cult figure in the Beat movement of the 1950s and later. He wrote many popular books, such as The Spirit of Zen, The Way of Zen, This Is It, Psychotherapy East & West, Beyond Theology, The Book: On the Taboo Against Knowing Who You Are, Does It Matter?, Cloud-Hidden, Whereabouts Unknown, Tao: The Watercourse Way, and his autobiography, In My Own Way.

He wrote in the Preface to this 1958 book, "I have been puzzled by the way in which exponents of the life of the spirit do not seem to be at home in nature and in their bodies... So often have I sympathized with bold pagan rebellion against this bodiless spirituality, and yet never joined it because the final word of this ... philosophy is always despair... But is the alternative to joy in the body delight in the discarnate spirit?" (Pg. x) He states, "Above all, sexual love is the most intense and dramatic of the common ways in which a human being comes into union and conscious relationship with something outside himself... cultures in which the individual feels isolated from nature are also cultures wherein men feel squeamish about the sexual relationship, often regarding it as degrading and evil---especially for those dedicated to the life of the spirit." (Pg. 11) He adds, "Theoretically, the Christian sacrament of Holy Matrimony is supposed to sanctify the relationship, but in practice it does to only by indirection and by prohibitions... This grudging toleration of sexuality as an unbearable pressure which, sometimes and under strict conditions, has to be released puts it on the level of an urge to stool, of a regrettable vestige of animality, happily to be left behind in the Kingdom of Heaven." (Pg. 12-13) He suggests, "there is a deep and quite extraordinary incompatibility between the atmosphere of Christianity and the atmosphere of the natural world... Yet if God made this world, how is it possible to feel so powerful a difference of style between the God of church and altar... and the world of the open sky?" (Pg. 27-28) He adds, "Christian doctrine admits, in theory, that God is immanent, but in practice it is always his transcendence, his otherness, which is always stressed." (Pg. 40)

He points out, "the skin DIVIDES the body from the rest of the world as one thing from others in thought but not in nature. In nature the skin is as much a joiner as a divider, being, as it were, the bridge whereby the inner organs have contact with air, warmth, and light." (Pg. 55) Later, he states, "Man meets the world outside with a soft skin, with a delicate eyeball and eardrum, and finds communion with it through a warm, melting, vaguely defined, and caressing touch whereby the world is not set at a distance like an enemy to be shot, but embraced to become one flesh, like a beloved wife." (Pg. 81) He suggests, "circumstances of religious ardor, sexual passion, or medical assurance create an atmosphere in which the organism can permit its own spontaneous reactions to the full. Under these conditions the organism is no longer split into the natural animal and the controlling ego. The whole being is one with its own spontaneity and feels free to let go with the utmost abandon." (Pg. 108)

He observes, "Perhaps we may now see why men have an almost universal tendency to seek relief from their own kind among the trees and plants, the mountains and waters... perhaps the reason for this love of nonhuman nature is that communion with it restores us to a level of our own human nature at which we are still sane, free from humbug, and untouched by anxieties about the meaning and purpose of our lives... The birds and beasts indeed pursue their business of eating and breeding with the utmost devotion. But they do not justify it, they do not pretend that it serves higher ends, or that it makes a significant contribution to the progress of the world." (Pg. 122-123)

He asserts, "The common mistake of the religious celibate has been to suppose that the highest spiritual life absolutely demands the renunciation of sexuality, as if the knowledge of God were an alternative to the knowledge of woman, or to any other form of experience... But this raises the question as to whether renunciation as such is sacrifice in the proper sense of an act which 'makes holy'... the thing offered. For if sexuality is a relationship and an activity, can it be offered when neither the relationship nor the activity exists?" (Pg. 147) He states, "a truly natural sexuality is by no means a spontaneity in the sense of promiscuity breaking loose from restraint... The experience of sexual love is therefore no longer to be sought as the repetition of a familiar ecstasy, prejudiced by the expectation of what we already know. It will be the exploration of our relationship with an ever-changing, ever unknown partner, unknown because he or she is not in truth ... the set of conditioned reflexes which society has imposed... the woman is always a mystery to man, and man to woman." (Pg. 158-159) He adds, "the 'pure' male and the 'pure' female have nothing in common and no means of communication with each other... What a REAL man or woman is always remains inconceivable, since their reality lies in nature, not in the verbal world of concepts." (Pg. 179)

This is perhaps Watts’ most lyrical, thought-provoking and emotionally moving book. Not only his readers, but students of many forms of spirituality will find much to treasure in this book.

About the Author

Davita Silfen Glasberg is a Professor and Chair of the Sociology Department at the University of Connecticut-Storrs. She has published extensively on issues of bank hegemony, the state in finance capitalism, and political economy, including The Power of Collective Purse Strings: The Effects of Bank Hegemony on Corporations and the State (University of California Press). She is also deeply involved in research regarding the social constructions of race, class, and gender. I am currently working on a book about power, oppression, and the state, which explores this question. She has co-authored the following college texts:

Deric Shannon received his B.A. and M.A. in Sociology from Ball State University and his PhD in Sociology from the University of Connecticut, and currently he is an Associate Professor at Quinebach Valley Community College. He authored "Anarchism, Communism, and Socialism" in the Encyclopedia of Modern Revolutions (James Defronzo, ed.) and is co-editor of Contemporary Anarchist Studies: An Introductory Reader of Anarchy in the Academy (Routeledge).
